The patronal feast of the seaside village of Sant'Angelo, featuring a sea procession and pyromusical fireworks.
In Sant'Angelo, a hamlet of the municipality of Serrara Fontana on the southern tip of the island of Ischia, the Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is the event that marks the end of the season and returns the village to its locals. It is celebrated every year on September 29th and 30th, during the days of the Archangel's liturgical solemnity, and is preceded by a three-day preparation period in the parish church named after the saint.
The village, closed to traffic and clustered around the isthmus connecting it to the Tower, is the perfect setting for a popular celebration: the narrow alleys, the small square overlooking the fishermen's harbor, and the white terraced houses by the sea become the natural stage for two days of rituals, music, and light.
The heart of the feast is the sea procession on September 30th. In the late afternoon, the statue of Saint Michael is embarked at the fishermen's harbor and hoisted onto a festively decorated fishing boat, which sets sail followed by a long trail of illuminated boats. The procession navigates toward Punta Chiarito and continues along the coast to the Maronti beach before returning to the bay.
The landing takes place under the Tower: from there, a torchlight procession accompanies the saint to the square and then into the church. It is a ritual that speaks to the true history of this place, a community of fishermen who for centuries relied on the Archangel to return home from the sea. Along the route, hotels, restaurants, and coastal homes greet the passage with their own fireworks, while the sunset on the southern side of the island does the rest.
The schedule of the feast repeats year after year with few variations:
The Aurora - Cittร di Panza brass band, a historic island ensemble, has accompanied these two days for years: their lyrical-symphonic concert in the square, before the fireworks, is one of the moments most loved by islanders.
With executive decree no. 382 of August 13, 2025, the Campania Region inscribed the Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel of Sant'Angelo in the Inventory of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Campania (IPIC), in the category of celebrations. The recognition was presented on December 15, 2025, in Naples at the Teatro Trianon Viviani, along with the third edition of the IPIC catalog. For Serrara Fontana, this is a milestone that consolidates Ischia's role as a guardian of traditions that are still alive and not reconstructed for tourism.
Serrara Fontana is the highest municipality on the island of Ischia, in the Metropolitan City of Naples: it rises from the sea of Sant'Angelo to the slopes of Mount Epomeo, among terraces, vineyards, and trails. Sant'Angelo is its seaside hamlet, a pedestrian village accessible only on foot or by sea, famous for the Sorgeto bay, the Maronti fumaroles, and natural thermal springs. Coming here at the end of September means finding the island in a quieter version, with the low light of autumn and the rhythms of the community prevailing over those of the beach season.
The Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel returns to Sant'Angelo d'Ischia on Tuesday, September 29th and Wednesday, September 30th, 2026: the dates remain unchanged as they coincide with the liturgical solemnity of the Archangel and the established tradition of the seaside village of Serrara Fontana.
This is the first edition to be celebrated after the feast's inscription in the Inventory of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Campania, which took place by regional decree in 2025: a recognition that has further highlighted the sea procession and the centuries-old bond between the fishing community and its patron saint.
As every year, the celebrations are preceded by a three-day preparation period in the parish and conclude on the evening of September 30th with the navigation of the statue toward Punta Chiarito and the Maronti, the return under the Tower, and the fireworks over the bay. The detailed program, including times, musical guests, and shuttle services, will be released by the Municipality of Serrara Fontana in the weeks leading up to the feast.
Ischia can be reached by ferry or hydrofoil from Naples (Molo Beverello, Calata Porta di Massa) and from Pozzuoli. From Ischia Porto, continue with the EAV bus lines toward Serrara Fontana and Sant'Angelo. The village of Sant'Angelo is pedestrian-only: cars must be left in the parking lots of Succhivo and Panza, and you can walk down the path leading to the square, or arrive by water taxi from Sant'Angelo and the Maronti.
On the evenings of the feast, the Municipality of Serrara Fontana usually operates a free shuttle service from the parking lots in the Panza area toward the village, with evening and night runs. Schedules are communicated with the official program.
Participation in the celebrations, processions, square concerts, and pyrotechnic shows is free. Seats on the boats following the sea procession are limited and are distributed in the days prior at the newsstand and agencies in the village.
Sant'Angelo and nearby Panza offer hotels, guesthouses, and vacation homes; many thermal facilities on the island are still open at the end of September. Given the coincidence with the patronal feast, it is advisable to book a few weeks in advance.
