The international film festival on dialogue between cultures and faiths
The Terni Film Festival – Peoples and Religions is one of the longest-running international film festivals in Umbria. Founded in 2005 by Bishop Vincenzo Paglia as a response to the post-9/11 tensions, it was established with the ambition of promoting an "encounter of civilizations" as an alternative to the "clash of civilizations." It is held annually in November in Terni, the city of Saint Valentine.
Organized by ISTESS (Institute of Theological and Historical-Social Studies), the festival annually addresses themes such as interreligious dialogue, spirituality in cinema, the integration of migrants, visual education, and the fight against gender-based violence. Among its distinctive features are screenings for inmates at Terni prison and morning sessions for schools, which also make the festival an experience of citizenship.
The program includes international competitions for feature films, short films, and documentaries, conferences, and round tables. The honorary president is Polish director Krzysztof Zanussi, the historic patron is actress Maria Grazia Cucinotta; the director is Stefania Parisi. The main venue for screenings is the CityPlex Politeama Lucioli, with events spread across other locations in the city.
For the Province of Terni and for all of Umbria, Peoples and Religions is much more than a film review: it is an opportunity to reflect, through the big screen, on peace, coexistence, and the future of humanity, with a debate that changes theme and geographical perspective each year.
The XXII edition of the Terni Film Festival – Peoples and Religions will be held in November 2026 in Terni, confirming the annual event promoted by ISTESS. The festival will once again feature international competitions for feature films, short films, and documentaries, alongside conferences, round tables, morning sessions for schools, and screenings for inmates.
Currently, the theme for the 2026 edition and the exact dates have not yet been publicly announced: ISTESS typically reveals them in the months leading up to the event. The detailed program will be published on the festival's official website and channels. The main venue remains the CityPlex Politeama Lucioli, with events spread throughout the center of Terni.
The detailed program for the XXII edition (theme, guests, screening and competition schedule) will be announced by ISTESS in the months preceding the event. Updates at popoliereligioni.it.
Terni is served by the Rome–Ancona railway line and the Central Umbrian Railway; by car, it can be reached from the E45 and the Terni–Orte expressway. The CityPlex Politeama Lucioli is located in the city center.
Information on tickets, accreditations, and the program can be found on the official website and ISTESS channels. Many side events (conferences, round tables) are free to attend.
