Amelia celebrates its patron saint with a festival of faith and historical re-enactment
In Amelia, an ancient city in the province of Terni in southern Umbria, Saint Fermina has been the revered patron saint for centuries. Her feast day, celebrated on November 24th, is one of the defining events for the community of Amelia, uniting the religious, historical, and civic dimensions.
The feast is preceded by a three-day preparation period and culminates on November 24th, marked by solemn Masses in the Cathedral of Amelia. Alongside the religious celebrations, the day features a true historical re-enactment: the historical pageant of the districts in 14th-century costumes, the ox-drawn cart, and, most importantly, the ancient rite of the weighing and offering of candles by the mayors of the Mandamento, as stipulated by the municipal Statutes of 1346.
The festival involves the entire city: flag-wavers and musicians animate the squares, the procession winds through the historic center, and collateral events – an artisan market, food stalls, and live music – accompany the day. Promoted by the Pro Loco of Amelia, the Feast of Saint Fermina is a fixed annual event that preserves a heritage of rites and traditions dating back to the Middle Ages, making it one of the most characteristic patronal feasts in southern Umbria.
The 2026 edition of the Feast of Saint Fermina will be held in Amelia from November 22nd to 24th, with the three-day preparation on November 22nd and 23rd and the main feast on Monday, November 24th, the patron saint's day. As it is an annual fixed event, the program will follow the established traditions.
