Santa Barbara - Patronal Feast of Rieti

A city and its patron saint

December 4th is the most significant date on the civil and religious calendar of Rieti, the capital of the province of the same name in Lazio. On this day, the city celebrates Santa Barbara, the patron saint of the municipality and the Rieti diocese. A 3rd-century martyr, her conversion is traditionally linked to Scandriglia, in the Sabine territory. Her relics are kept in the Cathedral of Santa Maria, the heart of the celebrations alongside the Basilica of Sant'Agostino and the church of San Michele Arcangelo.

Barbara is invoked as a protector against lightning and sudden, violent death; for this reason, she is the patron saint of the Fire Brigade, who play a central role in the Rieti festival, as well as other professions exposed to danger. This devotion, documented since the early Middle Ages, has evolved into a city liturgy that is renewed every year with the same structure: novena, procession, pontifical mass, and fair.

The procession on the waters of the Velino

The most iconic moment is the procession on the Velino river, conceived and organized by the Santa Barbara nel Mondo Cultural Association, founded in 1996 to promote the figure of the patron saint. The statue leaves the Fire Brigade barracks, travels through the city districts escorted by firefighters and local police, and reaches the river: here, it is placed on a boat that slowly descends the waters, accompanied by sacred music and the torches of the Fire Brigade.

The procession then continues on foot along the Roman Bridge, via Roma, and the main squares, reaching the cathedral for Advent vespers and the bishop's blessing. In recent editions, the evening has been complemented by a fireworks display and artistic lighting on the facades of Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and Piazza Cesare Battisti, featuring Christmas and Franciscan-themed projections dedicated to the Rieti Holy Valley.

The ceremonies of December 4th

The patron saint's day follows a well-established script. In the morning, the Provincial Fire Brigade Command opens its doors to the public with a display of rescue vehicles; this is followed by the laying of a wreath at the monument dedicated to the corps' fallen at the monumental cemetery, and mass at the church of San Michele Arcangelo, which concludes with the Firefighter's Prayer.

In the afternoon, the city lights up the Christmas illuminations on the river, and the day culminates with the solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by the Bishop of Rieti. Cultural events are also abundant: exhibitions, presentations, and newly unveiled restorations at the Civic Museum, as well as performances by local marching bands in the historic center.

The Santa Barbara Fair

Alongside the religious dimension, the grand city fair takes place, representing one of the most anticipated commercial events of the year in Sabina. The stalls occupy a large portion of the center:

• Piazza Angelucci and Piazzale Foro Boario;
• Lungovelino Don G. Olivieri.

The offerings range from local and regional gastronomy to clothing, footwear, household goods, kitchenware, gardening supplies, animals, and handicrafts: a very popular opportunity for Christmas shopping.

Why it's worth the trip

Santa Barbara is the best way to experience Rieti in winter, when the historic center and the riverfront light up and the city reveals its most authentic character. The festival combines solemn liturgy, civil memory, popular tradition, and commerce on a human scale. Visitors can take the opportunity to explore the cathedral, the papal palace, the Visconti walls, and the four Franciscan sanctuaries of the Holy Valley, located just a few kilometers from the capital.
