Every year around November 22nd, the village of Contigliano, in the province of Rieti, gathers to celebrate its most cherished tradition: the Saint Cecilia Festival, patron saint of musicians and singers. For three days, the Sabina community honors the saint with a mix of music, history, spirituality, and conviviality, fostering a unique sense of unity across the village. It is an authentically popular festival, deeply rooted in the identity of this small town in Lazio, where music has become a cornerstone of the collective memory.

The Romagnoli Music Band: A cultural pillar

The beating heart of the festival is the Romagnoli Music Band, now organized as a social promotion association (APS). Its history dates back to the 19th century, when the Municipality of Contigliano held a national competition to select a conductor. The winner was Enrico Romagnoli, a musician who arrived in 1872 from Medicina, near Bologna, and made this Sabina village his adopted home. Since his passing in 1921, the band has proudly carried his name. Led by Maestro Mauro Valeriani, the band brings together musicians of all ages and is considered a vital cultural institution for the region.

The three-day program

The festival takes place over a weekend in late November, alternating between musical, historical, and religious events:

• The Collegiate Church Concert: The highlight of the festival, where the band performs famous works ranging from opera and symphonic repertoire to grand marches, often paying tribute to the historic Fedeli organ.
• Village Heritage: A meeting dedicated to the life of Maestro Enrico Romagnoli and the band's centennial history.
• Solemn Mass: Held in the crypt of the Collegiate Church with the musicians in attendance, followed by a majorette performance in the square and the traditional community lunch.
