The medieval village of Teano turns into an open-air theater blending Gospel, art, and community
There is no edition scheduled in 2026 for this event. This page remains accessible to archive the history of the manifestation and will be updated if a new edition is announced.
The Teano Living Nativity is one of the most anticipated Christmas events in the Municipality of Teano, located in the province of Caserta, in the heart of northern Campania. Every year, between Christmas and Epiphany, the medieval village of ancient Teanum Sidicinum sheds its daily routine: wooden doors, stone stairs, and narrow alleys become the natural backdrop for a performance that involves the entire community.
The event is organized by the Il Campanile cultural association, led by president Valter Giarrusso, and features over one hundred people, including actors and extras, supported by guides who accompany visitors from scene to scene. "Ours is not the classic Neapolitan nativity scene, but true open-air theater with actors and extras," Giarrusso has often explained, a formula that distinguishes Teano from other living nativity scenes in the province.
The strength of the event lies in the choice to change the scenes every year, ensuring that returning visitors never see the same show twice. Alongside the Nativity, traditionally set up near the church of San Pietro, there are living tableaux inspired by Gospel episodes: the Census, the entry into Jerusalem, Herod's court, and the encounters and miracles of Jesus. In the most elaborate editions, the route has featured up to eleven scenes, one hundred actors, and seven guides, with tableaux such as the healing of the centurion's servant, Jesus and the Samaritan woman, the resurrection of Lazarus, and the Last Supper.
The living nativity has deep roots in Teano: the first performance, perhaps the first in the entire territory, dates back to 1969 and was organized by the Autonomous Youth Group for Teano, which managed it for nearly thirty years until the last edition in 1995, which was also replicated in the main square of Spoleto. After a long hiatus, the Il Campanile association picked up the baton, bringing the performance back to the narrow streets and courtyards of the historic center, where the event still takes place today.
In recent years, the Teano Living Nativity has also taken on a civic value: the edition dedicated to peace "against all wars, especially those of a religious nature" saw citizens of different faiths collaborate on the set design, including Muslim set designer Siham Lachgar. "Our nativity is a bridge between cultures, an opportunity for dialogue," the association president declared. A trait that has brought the event to the attention of the national press.
Those visiting the performance can combine it with a stop at the Teano Archaeological Museum, open for the event, which houses a precious mosaic considered one of the first known depictions of the Nativity: a direct and almost symbolic link between the ancient Sidicinian city and the theme of the nativity scene. In past editions, the museum of rural life has also been accessible.
As an entirely outdoor performance, the Teano Living Nativity is particularly exposed to weather conditions: the December 2024 edition was first postponed due to very strong winds and then cancelled, while the one scheduled for January 4, 2026, was called off on the eve of the event due to bad weather forecasts. However, the organizers have always confirmed their desire to propose the event again, which remains one of the symbols of the cultural winter in the Municipality of Teano and the entire province of Caserta.
The performance was expected on Sunday, January 4, 2026, from 5:00 PM, in the medieval village of Teano, in the province of Caserta. The Il Campanile cultural association had announced the involvement of over one hundred people, including actors and extras, and a route of theatrical scenes renewed compared to previous years, with the opening of the Teano Archaeological Museum and its mosaic, one of the first known depictions of the Nativity.
On January 3, 2026, however, president Valter Giarrusso announced the cancellation: "With great regret, we are forced to cancel this edition of the living nativity." The prohibitive weather forecasts, with heavy rain in the following days, left no room for postponement. "We hope to be able to organize it for next year," added the president. For the Teano event, this was the second consecutive stop due to bad weather, after the cancellation of the December 2024 edition, which was halted by very strong winds.
Teano (ZIP 81057) is located in the province of Caserta, in Campania. By car, take the Caianello exit on the A1 Milan-Naples motorway and continue towards Teano. By train, the nearest stations are Teano (about 2 km from the center), Sparanise (about 7 km), and Vairano-Caianello (about 8 km), on the Rome-Naples line.
The performance winds through the medieval village, i.e., the historic center of Teano, among alleys, courtyards, stairways, and small squares; the Nativity is traditionally set up near the church of San Pietro. The route is on foot on historic paving and uphill: comfortable shoes and winter clothing are recommended.
Admission is free. Recent editions have started in the late afternoon, approximately from 5:00 PM. Refreshment points with sandwiches, hot chocolate, and tea have been set up along the route.
The event takes place entirely outdoors and has been cancelled in the past due to bad weather: it is advisable to check the confirmation of the date on the Il Campanile association's channels and in the local press before setting off. Combine with a visit to the Teano Archaeological Museum, open during the event.
