The Nativity comes to life amidst ancient crafts and Christmas markets in the historic district of Taverne
The Taverne Living Nativity is one of the most heartfelt additions to the Christmas season in Nocera Superiore, a town in the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area in the province of Salerno, Campania. The event was conceived and promoted by the cultural association Uno, nessuno e centomila, which involved residents, families, and especially many young people from the district in a neighborhood project built step by step. The project coordination was entrusted to Professor Anna Zarrella, while the association president, Salvatore Salvato, has repeatedly emphasized the desire to enhance the historical and cultural identity of the territory.
The parish community stood alongside the association: Father Giuseppe Perano, pastor of the San Michele Arcangelo church, provided the oratory, which was transformed into a preparation workshop and meeting point for the performers. The initiative took place under the patronage of the Municipality of Nocera Superiore and became a full-fledged part of the city's Christmas program.
The heart of the event is the route set up along Via Taverne, which is closed to traffic for the occasion to return the street to visitors. Courtyards, entryways, and neighborhood spaces become natural stages for a story that alternates between the sacred and the everyday: the representation of the Nativity with living shepherds intertwines with historical settings carefully reconstructed by volunteers.
Enriching the walk are the Christmas markets set up along the path, where visitors find local products and artisanal crafts. It is an opportunity to discover small local productions and take home a souvenir of the edition, in a family atmosphere that fosters encounters between the generations of the neighborhood.
The formula chosen by the organizers concentrates the nativity scene into two symbolic evenings of the holidays: St. Stephen's Day and Epiphany. The evening hours, from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM, enhance the play of light and shadow on the scenes and give the neighborhood a suspended atmosphere, very different from that of a nativity scene visited by day.
Taverne is a historic district of Nocera Superiore, a city that stands on the territory of ancient Nuceria and offers a calendar full of events spread across squares, churches, and municipal spaces during the Christmas period. The living nativity adds a piece of popular participation to this mosaic: not a show imposed from above, but a collective work in which the neighborhood stages itself, its own memory, and its own faith.
The association has expressed the hope that this first edition represents the beginning of a tradition to be passed down over time: a goal that, in light of the public's response, seems within the neighborhood's reach.
The debut of the Taverne Living Nativity arrived with Christmas 2025: two evenings, St. Stephen's Day and Epiphany, to inaugurate what the Uno, nessuno e centomila association presented as the beginning of a tradition to be passed down over time. The historic district of Taverne, in Nocera Superiore, was transformed into an open-air itinerary, with Via Taverne closed to traffic to safely welcome visitors.
Along the route, evocative historical settings, ancient crafts brought to life, and scenes of daily life carefully reconstructed by the performers—mostly young people from the neighborhood—alternated. At the center of the itinerary was the representation of the Nativity with living shepherds. Enriching the atmosphere were the Christmas markets with local products and artisanal crafts.
The project was coordinated by Professor Anna Zarrella, with association president Salvatore Salvato and the support of Father Giuseppe Perano, pastor of the San Michele Arcangelo church, who provided the oratory. The initiative took place under the patronage of the Municipality of Nocera Superiore, as part of the city's Christmas program.
The route is visited on foot, with Via Taverne closed to traffic for the entire duration of the evenings.
