The toughest vertical kilometer in the Chisone Valley, from Castel del Bosco to Punta Midì
The Super Vertical La Feroce is one of the most demanding mountain running tests in the Roure area, a municipality in the upper Chisone Valley within the Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont. The name is no coincidence: this is a true vertical kilometer pushed to the extreme, with an average gradient that tests even the most prepared athletes. The start is set in the picturesque hamlet of Castel del Bosco, at an altitude of 776 meters, and the finish line is at the summit of Punta Midì, at 2,210 meters above sea level.
On a course of just 6.4 kilometers, competitors must overcome 1,406 meters of positive elevation gain: a ratio that places La Feroce among the toughest climbs on the Piedmontese calendar. The maximum time to complete the race is set at 3 hours, after which the final cut-off gate closes. The route winds along alpine paths overlooking the valley, rewarding those who reach Punta Midì with a spectacular panorama of the Chisone and Germanasca valleys.
The event is organized by G.S.R. Castel del Bosco, a sports and recreational group founded in 1976 with deep roots in the social fabric of Roure. The association, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026, enlivens the hamlet with all kinds of sporting and recreational events: vertical and mountain running races, motorcycle trial events, flea markets, and social gatherings like the Garnier community barbecue. Super Vertical La Feroce represents the evolution of a solid tradition of vertical races on the steep slopes surrounding Castel del Bosco.
This competition is reserved for adult athletes who are experienced in mountain running and possess good physical preparation. To participate, you must be at least 18 years old, hold a valid competitive medical certificate, and have a FIDAL, UISP, or Runcard membership. It is also mandatory to carry alpine safety equipment: a windproof and waterproof jacket, thermal blanket, water and energy supplies, a mobile phone, and a whistle. The registration fee includes the race pack, refreshments along the route, a final lunch with beer, and medical assistance.
More than just a race, La Feroce is an opportunity to experience the Piedmontese mountains intensely: the fatigue of the climb, the camaraderie among competitors, and the final celebration make it a beloved event for the skyrunning community. Every year, Roure and its hamlet of Castel del Bosco welcome athletes from all over Piedmont and neighboring regions, set in a natural landscape of great beauty at the foot of the Cottian Alps.
