The South Tyrolean jazz festival within the walls of the Fortezza Fortress in the Isarco Valley
The Fortezza Fortress stage of the Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige is one of the most scenic settings of one of Europe's most original jazz festivals. Founded in 1983, the festival is spread across the entire Autonomous Province of Bolzano, in Trentino-Alto Adige, with over fifty concerts reaching cities, valleys, and mountain peaks every summer. The municipality of Fortezza/Franzensfeste, at the entrance to the Isarco Valley, is one of the festival's most distinctive stops: here, music resonates within the walls of the monumental Fortezza Fortress.
Built between 1833 and 1838 as a Habsburg military barrier, the Festung Franzensfeste is now an extraordinary cultural and exhibition space. Its vast stone environments—internal courtyards, powder magazines, walkways, and vaulted halls—offer the festival a unique acoustic and visual context, where the grandeur of 19th-century architecture dialogues with live music. True to the festival's philosophy, which favors unusual and unconventional locations, the fortress transforms for a day into a multi-level stage.
The Fortezza stage reflects the spirit of the entire festival: contemporary jazz, collective improvisation, and the blending of musical languages, with unpredictability as a common thread. Alongside big names from the European scene, there is space for projects that weave jazz with South Tyrolean brass band traditions and electronics, in a continuous dialogue between research and the territory.
A small town at the crossroads between the Isarco Valley and the Puster Valley, Fortezza owes its identity to the very fortress that marked its history. The jazz stop thus becomes part of a rich cultural summer that combines avant-garde music, historical heritage, and alpine landscapes, offering the festival audience an experience that weaves together listening, discovery of the monument, and knowledge of the bilingual identity of South Tyrol.
During the 44th edition of the Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige (June 26 – July 5, 2026), the municipality of Fortezza/Franzensfeste was one of the most evocative stops of the festival, which spread across the entire Province of Bolzano, with a concert inside the monumental Fortezza Fortress.
On July 3, 2026, the German trumpeter and multi-instrumentalist Matthias Schriefl, together with his quartet and the Musikkapelle Schabs (the Sciaves brass band) conducted by Simone Rungger, created an original encounter between brass band music, jazz, and improvisation, utilizing the vast stone environments of the fortress. A project that perfectly represented the festival's spirit, capable of fostering a dialogue between local tradition and contemporary sound research.
Fortezza is accessible by train along the Brenner and Puster Valley lines (Fortezza/Franzensfeste station, a major railway hub) and by car via the A22 Brenner motorway, taking the Bressanone/Vipiteno exit. The Fortezza Fortress is just a few minutes from the station.
The event takes place inside the Fortezza Fortress: for some appointments, admission is included in the museum ticket (approximately 9 euros), while other concerts may be paid or require a reservation. The program and tickets are available at suedtiroljazzfestival.com.
The stone environments of the fortress can be cool even in summer: appropriate clothing is recommended. It is best to arrive early to visit the monument and its exhibition spaces before the concert.
