The first contemporary art Triennale in the 'artists' town' of South Tyrol
In 2026, the medieval village of Chiusa/Klausen in the Isarco Valley (Province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige) inaugurates its first contemporary art Triennale, a new format set to recur every three years. From June 13 to November 7, 2026, the entire historic center transforms into an open-air exhibition space, reviving the artistic vocation of a town that hosted over three hundred painters and sculptors—primarily German-speaking—between 1874 and 1914. It is no coincidence that Chiusa is known as the artists' town, the very place that fascinated Albrecht Dürer in 1494, serving as the backdrop for his famous engraving 'Das große Glück'.
The inaugural edition revolves around the theme 'Mensch sein' ('Being Human'). At the heart of the Triennale are questions regarding encounters, diversity, and social cohesion, explored through the materials and languages of art: stone, wood, light, photography, and sound. Special attention is given to the participation of the local community and people with disabilities, in an event designed as a shared experience rather than a simple exhibition.
Five South Tyrolean artists—Lukas Mayr, Patrick Obkircher, Christian Gufler, Florian Tschurtschenthaler, and Bernhard Reiterer—will present site-specific works in five public spaces throughout the town. They are joined by twelve guest artists exhibiting their interdisciplinary works—painting, sculpture, performance, poetry, and music—at the Chiusa Civic Museum, housed in the former Capuchin Monastery. The journey is completed by two artistic interventions in the historic center.
The guiding concept is 'five main artists, five months, five invitations': each protagonist curates their own period of activity with rituals, concerts, workshops, photographic projects, and performances. The calendar is further enriched by collateral events—workshops, debates, readings, and concerts—distributed throughout the summer and autumn, guiding the visitor in a continuous dialogue with art and the Chiusa community.
