About Chiusa Triennale

From June 13 to November 7, 2026, Chiusa/Klausen in the Isarco Valley hosts its inaugural contemporary art Triennale. Centered on the theme 'Mensch sein / Being Human', five South Tyrolean artists will create site-specific works throughout the village, joined by twelve guest artists at the Civic Museum. Five months of installations, performances, concerts, and workshops in the historic 'artists' town' that once captivated Albrecht DĂĽrer.

A Triennale in the 'artists' town'

In 2026, the medieval village of Chiusa/Klausen in the Isarco Valley (Province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige) inaugurates its first contemporary art Triennale, a new format set to recur every three years. From June 13 to November 7, 2026, the entire historic center transforms into an open-air exhibition space, reviving the artistic vocation of a town that hosted over three hundred painters and sculptors—primarily German-speaking—between 1874 and 1914. It is no coincidence that Chiusa is known as the artists' town, the very place that fascinated Albrecht Dürer in 1494, serving as the backdrop for his famous engraving 'Das große Glück'.

The theme: 'Mensch sein / Being Human'

The inaugural edition revolves around the theme 'Mensch sein' ('Being Human'). At the heart of the Triennale are questions regarding encounters, diversity, and social cohesion, explored through the materials and languages of art: stone, wood, light, photography, and sound. Special attention is given to the participation of the local community and people with disabilities, in an event designed as a shared experience rather than a simple exhibition.

Artists and venues

Five South Tyrolean artists—Lukas Mayr, Patrick Obkircher, Christian Gufler, Florian Tschurtschenthaler, and Bernhard Reiterer—will present site-specific works in five public spaces throughout the town. They are joined by twelve guest artists exhibiting their interdisciplinary works—painting, sculpture, performance, poetry, and music—at the Chiusa Civic Museum, housed in the former Capuchin Monastery. The journey is completed by two artistic interventions in the historic center.

A five-month program

The guiding concept is 'five main artists, five months, five invitations': each protagonist curates their own period of activity with rituals, concerts, workshops, photographic projects, and performances. The calendar is further enriched by collateral events—workshops, debates, readings, and concerts—distributed throughout the summer and autumn, guiding the visitor in a continuous dialogue with art and the Chiusa community.

Chiusa Triennale — edition 2026

The first edition of the Chiusa/Klausen Triennale opens on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at 3:00 PM and closes on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at 6:00 PM. Five months dedicated to the theme 'Mensch sein / Being Human', with site-specific works in the historic center and a collective exhibition at the Civic Museum.

The 2026 inaugural edition of the Chiusa/Klausen Triennale spans five months, from June 13 to November 7, bringing contemporary art into the daily spaces of the Isarco Valley village. Five South Tyrolean artists intervene in public spaces, while twelve guest artists animate the halls of the Civic Museum with works of painting, sculpture, performance, poetry, and music.

The theme 'Being Human' guides a journey that weaves together stone, wood, light, photography, and sound, with a strong emphasis on community participation and inclusion.
