About Musik Brixen

Every summer, the Stiftung Musik Brixen brings world-class sacred and classical music to the heart of Brixen, filling the Baroque aisles of the Cathedral, the courtyard of the Bishop's Palace (Hofburg), and churches throughout the Eisack Valley. From May to September, the two strands of Musik & Kirche and Musik Kultur weave together masterpieces of the repertoire—Bach, Verdi, Rachmaninov, Mozart—performed by internationally renowned choirs, orchestras, and soloists. An event that blends spirituality, extraordinary acoustics, and the historic setting of one of South Tyrol's most charming art cities.

Musik Brixen: sacred and classical music in the heart of South Tyrol

Musik Brixen is the concert series organized by the Stiftung Musik Brixen (Musik Brixen Foundation), established in 2023 from the merger of two historic local institutions: the Brixner Initiative Musik und Kirche and the Kulturverein Brixen Musik. The festival brings Bressanone/Brixen, in the Province of Bolzano (South Tyrol), to life with a concert season running from May to September, centered in the majestic Brixen Cathedral.

Two strands: Musik & Kirche and Musik Kultur

The program is divided into two complementary paths. Musik & Kirche focuses on great sacred and choral music, performed primarily in the Cathedral, whose acoustics and Baroque architecture provide an ideal setting for masses, requiems, and vespers. Musik Kultur offers gala concerts and chamber music in historic venues such as the courtyard and the Kaisersaal of the Bishop's Palace (Hofburg), broadening the scope to include classical and symphonic repertoire.

An international lineup

The festival attracts top-tier choirs, orchestras, and soloists from across Europe. Past seasons have featured absolute masterpieces such as Johann Sebastian Bach's Mass in B minor, Giuseppe Verdi's Messa da Requiem, Sergei Rachmaninov's All-Night Vigil (Vespers), and works by Mozart, Schubert, and Mendelssohn. Alongside the concerts in the Cathedral, the program extends to other churches in the Eisack Valley, such as those in Vandoies and Vipiteno, involving the region in a true musical itinerary.

Brixen, a city of art and music

Located at the crossroads of the valleys, Brixen is the oldest city in South Tyrol and preserves a charming historic center, dominated by the Cathedral complex with its famous frescoed cloister and the Bishop's Palace. In this setting, music engages with history and the region's dual Italian and German linguistic identity, offering the audience deeply evocative evenings.

A project supported by the region

The Stiftung Musik Brixen is supported by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano and the Municipality of Brixen, as well as local private sponsors. Under the guidance of its artistic direction, the foundation complements its concerts with in-depth sessions, symposia, and musical training activities, confirming its role as a cultural landmark for the city and the entire Eisack Valley.

Musik Brixen — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of Musik Brixen features a wide-ranging program in the Brixen Cathedral and the city's historic venues. Highlights include Bach's Mass in B minor (July 16), Verdi's Requiem with the Audi Jugendchorakademie (July 25), Rachmaninov's All-Night Vigil conducted by Stephen Layton (August 12), the Haydn Orchestra in the Hofburg courtyard (August 14), and Mozart at the Hofburg (September 5), with additional concerts in Vandoies and Vipiteno.
