Knights' days at the foot of Castel Tasso
The Reifensteiner Rittertage (Reifenstein Knights' Days) is a historical medieval re-enactment held at the foot of Castel Tasso (known in German as Burg Reifenstein) in the municipality of Campo di Trens/Freienfeld, in the province of Bolzano, in the heart of the Upper Isarco Valley, just minutes from Vipiteno. For an entire weekend, the meadow below the castle transforms into an authentic medieval scene, complete with tents, banners, fires, and the clanging of armour.
The event attracts groups of re-enactors, merchants, artisans, and artists from various European countries, who set up a large, historically accurate encampment. Visitors can wander through the tents, observe daily camp life, watch demonstrations of ancient crafts, and explore a lively medieval market with over seventy stalls featuring handicrafts, period items, and gastronomic specialties.
The most anticipated moment is the grand tournament: full-contact armoured combat involving a large contingent of knights, featuring the spectacular Buhurt, one of the fastest-growing historical combat disciplines in Europe. As night falls, the atmosphere heats up with fire shows and live music from costumed bands, keeping the audience entertained until late.
The Reifensteiner Rittertage are also designed for children: archery, axe throwing, pony rides, and workshops allow kids to experience the medieval adventure firsthand. The setting of Castel Tasso, a 12th-century fortress that was never conquered and remains one of the best-preserved in South Tyrol, makes the experience even more evocative.
The event is part of the rich summer calendar of the Upper Isarco Valley and the Vipiteno area, offering visitors the chance to combine the discovery of South Tyrol's historical heritage with a day of celebration. Now in its early editions, the event has already become a staple of the summer in the municipality of Campo di Trens/Freienfeld.
The fourth edition of the Reifensteiner Rittertage is scheduled from Friday, July 17 to Sunday, July 19, 2026, at the foot of Castel Tasso in Campo di Trens/Freienfeld (BZ). Approximately 1,000 participants are expected, including knights, merchants, and artists from seven countries, with over 70 stalls featuring crafts, camp life, and medieval specialties.
The highlight is the grand battle scene with about 200 armoured fighters and the Buhurt tournament. There will also be evening fire shows, live music, and family activities: archery, axe throwing, and pony rides.
Hours: Friday and Saturday 10:00-23:30; Sunday 10:00-19:00. Tickets: adults €15, children 7-15 years €10, children 3-6 years €5.
