European contemporary jazz makes a stop in the heart of the Puster Valley
The concerts in Brunico as part of the Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige represent the Puster Valley stop of one of Europe's most original jazz festivals. Founded in 1983, the festival is itinerant and spread throughout the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, in Trentino-Alto Adige: every summer, over fifty concerts reach cities, valleys, and high-altitude mountain huts, featuring around 250 musicians from about twenty nations. The town of Brunico/Bruneck, the main hub of the Puster Valley and gateway to the Plan de Corones (Kronplatz) area, is one of the stops hosting the festival's evening lineup.
True to its philosophy, the festival leaves traditional concert halls behind to reach surprising spaces. In Brunico, concerts are held in unconventional settings, such as the Getränkeladen Harpf, a beverage shop transformed for the occasion into an intimate and informal stage. This choice reflects the spirit of the entire event, structured into themes like Jazz & the Cities, Jazz Night, and Jazz on the Mountains, which bring live music to both urban centers and Dolomite peaks.
The Brunico program reflects the vocation of the entire festival: contemporary jazz, collective improvisation, and experimentation, with unpredictability as a common thread. Alongside established names on the European scene, there is room for young ensembles and international projects in a continuous dialogue between tradition and research. Each evening is designed for a different location, so that listening becomes intertwined with discovering the city and its bilingual Italian and German identity.
A lively hub of the Puster Valley, Brunico welcomes the festival audience in a charming alpine setting, between the historic center dominated by the bishop's castle, the arcaded streets, and the landscapes of the Dolomites. The jazz evenings thus become part of a rich cultural summer that combines avant-garde music, historical heritage, and mountain nature in the heart of South Tyrol.
During the 2026 edition of the Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige (June 26 – July 5, 2026), the town of Brunico/Bruneck was one of the stops of the itinerant festival in the Puster Valley, with an event at the Getränkeladen Harpf.
On Wednesday, July 1st, at 9:00 PM, the Harpf beverage shop transformed into a stage for the German quartet CALAIDO, a young and tight-knit ensemble that combines contemporary jazz, groove, and electronica into a dynamic and experimental language, in line with the festival's spirit of research.
Brunico is accessible by train along the Puster Valley line (Brunico/Bruneck station) and by car via the SS49 Puster Valley state road, with a connection to the A22 Brenner motorway (Bressanone/Val Pusteria exit). Concerts take place in various locations throughout the city: it is recommended to check the official website for the exact venue of each event.
Some concerts have free admission, while others require a fee (roughly between 5 and 15 euros); for some events, booking may be required. The program and tickets are available at suedtiroljazzfestival.com.
Evenings generally begin around 9:00 PM. In summer, accommodation in Brunico and the Puster Valley is in high demand: it is best to book your stay in advance.
