European contemporary jazz arrives in the medieval square of Vipiteno, at the foot of the Alta Val d'Isarco.
The Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige is the premier event dedicated to contemporary jazz in Trentino-Alto Adige and one of the most original in Europe. Established in 1983, it spreads over fifty concerts across South Tyrol every summer, transforming cities, valleys, forests, and squares into one large sound stage. Among its northernmost stops is Vipiteno/Sterzing, in the Alta Val d'Isarco, within the Municipality of Vipiteno, in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano.
In Vipiteno, the festival chooses the Stadtplatz (Town Square) as its stage—the living room of the medieval village, enclosed by arcaded houses and dominated by the famous Twelve Tower (Zwölferturm). The evening open-air concert transforms one of South Tyrol's most beautiful squares into an open-air club, where original jazz dialogues with the Gothic and Renaissance architecture of the historic center. This is the festival's hallmark: the South Tyrolean urban and natural landscape itself becomes a resonance chamber for the sound.
Consistent with the artistic direction of the Südtirol Jazzfestival—led by Stefan Festini Cucco, Max von Pretz, and Roberto Tubaro—the Vipiteno stop provides a platform for young international ensembles and sound research projects, fostering a continuous dialogue between jazz tradition and contemporary improvisation. It is an opportunity for the public to hear emerging voices of European jazz up close in an intimate and evocative setting, often with free admission.
The Municipality of Vipiteno, with its medieval historic center considered one of the most characteristic in the Alps, is one of the most fascinating destinations in South Tyrol. Located along the Brenner axis, at the confluence of the Val d'Isarco, Val Ridanna, and Val di Vizze, it offers the ideal setting for an evening that weaves together contemporary jazz, a stroll through the village, and South Tyrolean hospitality. The Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige stop adds a touch of international culture to its summer offerings.
In 2026, the Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige stopped in Vipiteno/Sterzing on Wednesday, July 1st, at 9:00 PM, in the Stadtplatz, as part of the 44th edition of the festival (June 26 – July 5, 2026).
The evening featured the N∆BOU project, led by Belgian trombonist Nabou Claerhout, accompanied by Gijs Idema on guitar, Trui Amerlinck on double bass, and Daniel Jonkers on drums. An open-air, free-admission concert that brought contemporary European jazz to the medieval square of the Alta Val d'Isarco, amidst the arcaded houses and the Twelve Tower.
The Vipiteno stop confirmed the festival's itinerant formula: young talents of the European jazz scene in evocative locations across South Tyrol, in the Municipality of Vipiteno, in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano.
Vipiteno/Sterzing is located along the Brenner axis, served by the A22 motorway (Vipiteno exit) and the Brenner railway line, with the station just a few minutes from the historic center. The Stadtplatz is in the heart of the pedestrian village, reachable on foot from the city parking lots.
The Südtirol Jazzfestival concerts in Vipiteno are held in the Stadtplatz and are generally free of charge. Programs, schedules, and updates are available on suedtiroljazzfestival.com and the Alta Val d'Isarco tourism portal.
The concert takes place outdoors in the evening: we recommend clothing suitable for mountain temperatures, which can drop at night even in summer. It is advisable to arrive early to secure a good spot in the square and take advantage of the evening to visit the historic center and the Twelve Tower.
