The strudel festival in the Flatschwaldile woods of San Giorgio, a village near Brunico
In the municipality of Brunico/Bruneck, in the province of Bolzano (South Tyrol), the village of San Giorgio/St. Georgen preserves a beloved small summer tradition: the Strudelfest im Flatschwaldile, a festival dedicated to strudel. San Giorgio is located at the entrance to the Tures and Aurina valleys, nestled in a rural landscape of meadows, cornfields, and potato patches, and is one of the oldest settlements in the Puster Valley.
At the upper end of the village lies the Flatschwaldile, a small wooded area with an outdoor festival space that becomes the heart of community life in San Giorgio during the summer months. This is where the parish festival, the forest festival, and, of course, the Strudelfest are held. The woods are also linked to the tradition of the Kirschtamichl, the straw puppet of the local fair. In the shade of the trees, among benches and tables, the strudel festival offers a straightforward and convivial atmosphere, far from the large mass events.
The festival revolves around strudel, the iconic dessert of South Tyrolean cuisine, offered here in numerous variations. Alongside the classic apple strudel and sweet versions, you can also sample various savory strudels, prepared by local families and volunteers. There is also no shortage of sausages, fries, drinks, and coffee for a delicious break in the greenery.
The Strudelfest is organized by the San Giorgio parish choir (Kirchenchor St. Georgen): the proceeds support the association's activities, in a typical example of South Tyrolean village volunteering. The day is also designed for families, with games and entertainment for children, and represents a perfect opportunity to discover the genuine hospitality of the Puster Valley, combining a walk in nature with a gastronomic stop.
The event takes place over a single summer day, from late morning to the afternoon, and admission is free: you only pay for what you consume. It is ideal to combine with a hike along the Aurina Valley cycle path or a visit to the two churches dedicated to Saint George, including the parish church dating back to 1472. A small, authentic taste of South Tyrolean tradition, just minutes from the center of Brunico.
The 2026 edition of the Strudelfest im Flatschwaldile takes place on Sunday, August 2, 2026, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, in the festival area of the Flatschwaldile woods in San Giorgio/St. Georgen, a village of Brunico (BZ). The organization is entrusted to the San Giorgio parish choir.
