Two weekends in May of taste and tradition in the Italian capital of strawberries
The Strawberry Festival is the most anticipated event in Lagosanto, a town in the province of Ferrara on the Po Delta. For over thirty years, every May, the town transforms into the Italian capital of strawberries: this small town in Emilia-Romagna is indeed one of the most important centres for strawberry cultivation, thanks to the presence of historic nursery companies like Salvi Vivai, which has been producing strawberry plants for over fifty years that are exported throughout Italy and abroad.
The festival takes place over two weekends with a special mid-week event. The heart of the festival is the gastronomic stand at Palauser, the covered structure of the Circolo Auser on Via Donatori di Sangue, where the strawberry becomes the star of a menu ranging from first courses to desserts, alongside the traditional specialities of Ferrara. The festival is organised by the Pro Loco of Lagosanto with the support of the Municipality.
Traditional markets and a funfair with rides for children are set up in Piazza Vittorio Veneto. Among the most popular attractions is the Strawberry Train, which connects the town centre to the Salvi Vivai company and the former Marozzo pumping station, offering excursions to discover the cultivation areas. There are also creative workshops for children, wine tastings from local wineries, exhibitions, the traditional vintage car rally, and the grand final tombola (bingo).
More than just a gastronomic festival, the Lagosanto Strawberry Festival is an event of identity that tells the deep connection between this part of Emilia-Romagna and its agriculture. With agri-food conferences, initiatives dedicated to integration, and activities for families, the event is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Ferrarese region, far from the most crowded tourist circuits but rich in flavours and traditions.
The 31st edition of the Lagosanto Strawberry Festival was spread over two weekends in May 2026, with a mid-week event dedicated to local flavours. The organisation was handled by the Pro Loco of Lagosanto.
The covered gastronomic stand at the Palauser offered strawberry-based dishes and Ferrara specialities throughout the festival, while Piazza Vittorio Veneto hosted markets and the funfair. Among the highlights were the Strawberry Train to the Salvi Vivai company and the former Marozzo pumping station, workshops for children, tastings from local wineries, and the vintage car rally on the concluding Sunday.
Lagosanto is located in the province of Ferrara, in the Po Delta. By car, it can be reached from the Strada Statale Romea (SS309) or the Ferrara-Mare dual carriageway (Ferrara-Porto Garibaldi Link). The nearest train station on the Ferrara-Codigoro line is Lagosanto.
The gastronomic stand is hosted at the Palauser of Circolo Auser, in Via Donatori di Sangue. Markets and the funfair animate Piazza Vittorio Veneto, while other initiatives are held in Piazza 1° Maggio and at the former Marozzo pumping station.
