The ritual fires of March 19th in the village of Bovino

Every March 19th, the feast of St. Joseph, the medieval village of Bovino, in the province of Foggia, illuminates with its famous bonfires. Perched among the Daunian Mountains and surrounded by thousands of hectares of forest, the town preserves one of the most distinctive traditions of northern Apulia: the lighting of large ritual fires in various neighborhoods, around which the entire community gathers in a spirit of joy and sharing.
In Bovino, each neighborhood sets up its own bonfire, and a jury determines the best one by evaluating size, durability, and the spirit of hospitality. For several years, the Pro Loco of Bovino and the Confraternity of the SS. Annunziata, to strengthen the cultivation of ancient traditions among the younger generations, have organized a real competition between the town's districts: the setup and entertainment around the fires are judged according to specific regulations, with prizes of local products awarded to the competing teams.
Preparation begins well in advance: from the first days of March, the young people of Bovino scour the countryside in search of wood, shrubs, and "brushwood" to build the stacks. The event officially kicks off with the blessing of the first fire, followed by an evocative torchlight procession that carries the inaugural flame to ignite, one after another, the bonfires set up in the different neighborhoods of the town.
The most convivial part of the festival takes place around the fires: folk songs, music, dancing, and games involve residents and visitors alike. There is no shortage of gastronomy, with local specialties cooked over the embers: the renowned pork soffritto, an excellence of Bovino's cuisine, stands out, accompanied by good wine and other delicacies such as zeppole, potatoes, and lampascioni roasted under the ashes.
Included among the most evocative villages of the Daunia region, Bovino is known as "the village of 800 stone portals" and has maintained an almost intact historical fabric, far from mass tourism. The Municipality of Bovino and its Pro Loco enliven the entire year with a calendar rich in religious, cultural, and gastronomic events, but it is in the St. Joseph's Bonfires that the community most intensely rediscovers its sense of identity.
The St. Joseph's fires are traditionally lit on the evening of March 19th, the saint's day. At the moment, the Pro Loco Bovino UNPLI has not yet published the official program and regulations for the 2026 edition: information will be released on the Pro Loco and Municipality channels in the weeks leading up to the festival.
The Pro Loco Bovino UNPLI and the Confraternity of the SS. Annunziata have not yet published the dates, program, and regulations for the 2026 edition of the St. Joseph's bonfires. As per tradition, the large fires are lit in the village neighborhoods on the evening of March 19th, amidst torchlight processions, folk songs, and tastings of Bovino specialties. This page will be updated as soon as the organizers release the official details.
Bovino is located in the hinterland of the province of Foggia, in the Daunian Mountains. By car, it can be reached from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway (nearest exit) or from the SS90 state road of the Puglie. The reference train station is Bovino, on the Foggia-Benevento line; the nearest airport is Bari-Palese.
The event takes place in the neighborhoods of the historic center and admission is free. For the program, the competition regulations, and updated times, it is recommended to consult the channels of the Pro Loco Bovino UNPLI (tel. +39 333 8391890) and the Municipality of Bovino.
Comfortable and warm clothing is recommended, suitable for the still-cold March evenings in the mountains, along with shoes suitable for the village's stone streets.
