The grand patronal festival of Mussomeli, blending faith, processions, and spectacle
The Feast of the Madonna SS. dei Miracoli is the most important religious and popular event in Mussomeli, a town in the Sicilian hinterland in the province of Caltanissetta. The Madonna dei Miracoli is the town's Patron Saint, venerated since the 16th century in the Sanctuary dedicated to her, which stands on the site where tradition places the miracle that gave rise to the cult.
The legend dates back to the first half of the 16th century, during the rule of the Campo family. A paralyzed man, traveling to beg for alms, fell asleep on a stone: upon waking, he found himself miraculously healed and shouted "Miracle!". Shortly after, on the same stone, the faithful discovered the image of the Virgin with the Child imprinted. That stone, still embedded in the masonry of the crypt today, became the heart of a devotion that has never been interrupted. Over time, the statue of the Madonna has been adorned with gold and silver donated by the faithful for graces received, a custom that dates back to the gift of Donna Giovanna Lanza for the healing of her son.
The festival spans about two weeks and culminates in two solemn days, known as octaves. September 8th, which coincides with the liturgical feast of the Nativity of Mary, and the following September 15th feature hourly masses in the morning at the Sanctuary and the crypt. The most anticipated moment is the solemn procession of the Madonna's statue through the city streets: on September 8th, alongside the main statue, the small statue of Maria Bambina (the Infant Mary) in swaddling clothes is also carried, placed in a decorated basket, while the crowd cheers "Viva Maria".
The festival attracts pilgrims, tourists, and devotees from all over Sicily, transforming Mussomeli into a great center of faith and popular tradition, confirming its status as one of the most defining events of the entire Nissena province.
The 2026 Feast of the Madonna SS. dei Miracoli will return to Mussomeli, in the province of Caltanissetta, on September 8th and 15th, 2026, the two octaves that have marked the town's patronal cult for centuries. Hourly masses in the Sanctuary and crypt, the solemn procession of the Madonna's statue, and the procession of the Maria Bambina statuette on September 8th are confirmed.
The detailed program of religious and civil events, including sacred music concerts, exhibitions, and the final fireworks display, will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the festival.
Mussomeli is located in the hinterland of the Caltanissetta province, in Sicily. By car, it can be reached via the SS 189 and the provincial roads connecting the area to Agrigento and Caltanissetta. The nearest train station and the reference airports (Palermo and Catania) are about an hour and a half to two hours away by road.
The highlights are September 8th and 15th (the two octaves), with celebrations and initiatives spread across the surrounding weeks.
Admission to the celebrations and processions is free. It is advisable to arrive early on the days of the octaves due to the large influx of pilgrims and to wear appropriate clothing for entering the church.
