In the heart of inland Sicily, in Vicari—a municipality within the Metropolitan City of Palermo nestled along the Valle del Torto and overlooked by the ruins of its Norman castle—the Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is one of the community's most anticipated and defining events. This popular religious festival weaves together devotion, folklore, and rural memory, traditionally celebrated around September 29th, the day the Catholic Church commemorates Archangel Michael.
All ritual moments of the festival take place at the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie, the spiritual hub of the celebrations. The main day opens at dawn, around 7:00 AM, with the evocative alborata: a collective wake-up call marked by fireworks and the sound of brass bands, announcing the start of the festivities to the entire village.
In the early afternoon, the Organizing Committee hosts the cavalcade through the main streets of the town: a procession accompanied by the roll of drums featuring mules adorned "cu cianciani, giummi e specchi"—meaning decorated with bells, colorful tassels, and small mirrors according to ancient Sicilian custom. In the evening, the festival reaches its climax with the procession of the statue of Saint Michael the Archangel, carried on shoulders through the village streets amidst prayers, hymns, and the moving participation of the faithful.
Perched on a hill overlooking the Valle del Torto, Vicari preserves a fascinating historical heritage, starting with the medieval Castle of Vicari. The Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is part of a rich calendar of religious and popular celebrations in the municipality, alongside Holy Week, the Feast of Saint Joseph, and the Almond Festival, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into traditional Sicily.
The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced; it is recommended to check the channels of the Municipality of Vicari and the Organizing Committee for updates.
