About SS. Crocifisso Festival

Every year in early May, Muro Leccese celebrates the SS. Crocifisso Festival, one of the most deeply felt religious events in this Salento town in the province of Lecce. For three days, the venerated 17th-century wooden effigy of the Crucifix is carried in procession from the rural Church of the SS. Crocifisso to the Mother Church and back, amidst moments of prayer, brass band concerts, elaborate light displays, and fireworks that bring Piazza del Popolo to life.

A festival in the heart of Salento

The SS. Crocifisso Festival is one of the oldest and most attended religious celebrations in Muro Leccese, a small town in the Province of Lecce, located in the heart of Salento and Puglia. Every year, at the beginning of May, the entire community gathers around the venerated image of the Crucifix in an event that blends popular devotion, tradition, and civic festivities.

The wooden Crucifix and its church

The heart of the celebration is the wooden statue of the Crucifix, which depicts the crucified Jesus and dates back to the second half of the 17th century. It is housed in the evocative rural Church of the SS. Crocifisso, built in 1573 on the remains of an ancient place of worship linked to the memory of the medieval village of Brongo. The building, with its austere exterior, surprises visitors with its rich Baroque interior and preserves valuable works, including a Crucifixion attributed to the sculptor Placido Buffelli of Alessano. The church, closed for most of the year, opens solemnly specifically for the May festival.

Three days of processions and devotion

The central moment of the festival is the procession: the statue of the Crucifix is taken from the rural church to the Mother Church and, at the end of the festivities, solemnly returned to its sanctuary. The procession winds through the streets of the town accompanied by a large turnout of the faithful, amidst prayers, hymns, and moments of reflection. Liturgical celebrations, including Holy Masses and rites in honor of the Crucifix, mark the days of the event.

Civic festivities in Piazza del Popolo

Alongside the religious dimension, the festival comes alive with its more popular side in Piazza del Popolo, the town's beating heart. The evenings are enlivened by traditional brass band concerts performed by renowned Salento ensembles, such as those from the cities of Squinzano and Conversano, with sparkling light displays illuminating the streets and the highly anticipated fireworks displays that close the festivities. There are also moments dedicated to the community and the youth, such as recitals prepared by local school students.

A tradition guarded by the youth

The festival is organized by a committee of young citizens of Muro Leccese, a sign of a tradition passed down from generation to generation and deeply rooted in the town's identity. The SS. Crocifisso Festival thus represents not only an appointment of faith but also an occasion for meeting, memory, and cohesion for the entire Muro Leccese community.

2026 Edition

The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: the festival traditionally takes place in the first days of May, usually on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. The detailed program is communicated by the organizing committee in the weeks preceding the event.
