The festival of the co-patron saint of Taurisano, blending devotion and Salento tradition

The Madonna della Strada Festival is one of the most heartfelt events on the calendar in Taurisano, a town in Lower Salento in the province of Lecce, in southern Puglia. The Virgin of the Road is considered by popular devotion to be the co-patron saint of the town: her cult is linked to the ancient Sanctuary of Maria Santissima della Strada, which stands in the heart of the historic center, near Piazza Fontana. The building dates back to between the 13th and 14th centuries and preserves the memory of a devotion that locals trace back many centuries.
Local tradition links the birth of the cult to a miraculous episode: the intercession of the Virgin is said to have saved Taurisano from the plague. In gratitude, the faithful donated a golden cord to the statue, which still adorns it today. The focal point of the celebrations is the evocative 19th-century wooden statue group depicting the Virgin, carried in procession through the streets of the town amidst crowds, improvised altars, embroidered drapes, and arches of lights.
The festivities traditionally focus on September 7th and 8th, coinciding with the liturgical feast of the Nativity of Mary. The religious portion is preceded by a novena that begins in late August with the enthronement of the statue in the sanctuary. On the eve of the festival, Eucharistic celebrations take place, followed by the act of consecration of the city to the Virgin and the solemn procession accompanied by brass bands; the following day, the feast day itself, features the evocative Mass in the Byzantine rite, a testament to the Greco-Salento culture that deeply marks this land.
Alongside the sacred dimension, the festival features an intense secular program. The streets of the center light up with luminarie (artistic light displays), while grand brass band concerts from the Puglian musical tradition perform in the main squares. In the evening, the sky over Taurisano is illuminated by firework displays, followed by entertainment, cabaret, and live music that engages both young and old. The artisan market, children's rides, and food stalls complete the festive atmosphere that permeates the town for the entire duration of the celebrations.
More than just an event, the Madonna della Strada Festival represents a moment of identity for the entire community of Taurisano: emigrants returning home, reunited families, and visitors from neighboring towns gather around the sanctuary to renew an ancient bond. It is an authentic opportunity to discover the religious and popular traditions of Salento, far from the most crowded tourist circuits.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna della Strada Festival in Taurisano does not yet have an official program published. As is customary, the festivities dedicated to the co-patron saint should be held during the days of the Nativity of Mary, on September 7th and 8th, with the preparatory novena, the procession with the wooden statue group, brass bands, and fireworks. Dates and the final calendar will be communicated by the patronal festival committee. This page will be updated as soon as official information becomes available.
