The sprint orienteering race in the heart of an Asti village
The Sprint Viarigi Piedmont Trophy brings orienteering to the streets of Viarigi, a small town in the Province of Asti, in the heart of the Piedmontese Monferrato. The sprint discipline is the fastest and most spectacular form of orienteering: athletes must locate and reach a series of control points scattered across the area in the shortest possible time, following routes designed to highlight the town's urban and environmental features. It is a race where athletic performance, quick decision-making, and map-reading skills all play a crucial role.
The event is part of the Piedmont Trophy (Trofeo Coni Piemonte) circuit and is organized by Outdoor Piemonte Klub Miraflores ASD (OPK Miraflores), a sports club founded in 2019 with the mission of promoting orienteering and outdoor sports through initiatives for all ages. The event is supported by the Municipality of Viarigi and is one of the key stages in the regional orienteering season, under the aegis of the FISO Piedmont Delegation.
For the race, a 1:4,000 scale map with a 2.5-meter contour interval was created based on specialized surveys. This precise, high-detail map allows for a truly technical and accurate challenge, showcasing the intricate network of streets, squares, and hidden corners of this Asti village.
In addition to the competitive categories defined by the Piedmont Trophy regulations, there is a recreational (Ludico Motoria) category. This non-competitive class is designed for families, beginners, and curious newcomers who want to discover orienteering while walking with a map in hand. It is the perfect opportunity to try a sport that combines outdoor physical activity with mental focus, all in the welcoming setting of Viarigi.
Nestled in the hills of the Asti Monferrato, Viarigi is a village that preserves the charm of small Piedmontese communities. An orienteering race like this is also an opportunity to explore the town's streets from a unique perspective, running or walking in search of control points in corners that often go unnoticed by the hurried passerby.
