Spring in Amatrice: Gnocchi Ricci, local markets, and tradition
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Spring Festival is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Amatrice, located in the Province of Rieti, in the Lazio region. Organized by the Pro Loco of Amatrice in collaboration with the local municipality, the event traditionally takes place on April 25th, coinciding with Liberation Day, when this village in the Monti della Laga mountains welcomes the arrival of spring with a full day of outdoor festivities.
The heart of the celebration is the Gnocchi Ricci Festival, dedicated to what is considered the oldest dish in the Amatrice culinary tradition. The gnocchi ricci (curly gnocchi) are strictly handmade, one by one, by local housewives using only a few simple ingredients: eggs, flour, and water. Their characteristic curled shape comes from a technique passed down through generations, which visitors can observe and learn during the workshop hosted by the Pro Loco.
The structure of the day remains consistent year after year, blending gastronomy, craftsmanship, and entertainment:
Amatrice is known worldwide as the home of amatriciana, but its cuisine is deeply rooted in a pastoral culture defined by simple, hearty dishes. The Spring Festival is the perfect opportunity to rediscover this heritage in a convivial setting, highlighting local products and the work of local associations. Since the 2016 earthquake, events like this have taken on even greater significance, becoming a symbol of rebirth and community belonging for the people of Amatrice.
The event is designed for all ages: you can stroll through the market stalls, visit local shops, participate in the workshop, and finally sit down for an outdoor meal. Admission to the festival and the market is free, while the tasting session is available via the menus offered by the Pro Loco. It is a genuine way to experience a spring day in the Rieti area, surrounded by authentic flavors and the landscapes of the Monti della Laga.
As every year, the Spring Festival in Amatrice is expected around April 25th, with the Gnocchi Ricci Festival hosted by the Pro Loco of Amatrice. At the time of writing, the official date and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published: we recommend checking for updates on the Pro Loco and municipal channels before traveling.
Amatrice is located in the northeastern corner of Lazio, bordering the Marche, Umbria, and Abruzzo regions. By car, it can be reached via the A24 motorway (Valle del Salto or Rome-L'Aquila exit) and then along the SS4 Salaria; from Rieti, take the SS4 towards Ascoli Piceno. The nearest train station is in Rieti, which is connected by bus services.
The festival traditionally takes place on April 25th, with the market opening in the morning and activities continuing until the afternoon.
Free admission to the market and activities; the gnocchi ricci tasting and the spring menu are available for purchase at the Pro Loco stands.
We recommend comfortable clothing and booking in advance for the tasting session during peak hours. Don't miss a visit to the local village shops to discover typical regional products.
