The traditional patron saint fair in the village of Posta, in the Upper Velino Valley
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year, in the first days of December, the village of Posta celebrates Saint Barbara with a traditional fair that stands as one of the most anticipated events of the winter season. The event takes place in the heart of the town, in Piazza degli Eroi, and involves the entire community in a day of celebration that weaves together religious devotion, a market, and social gathering. Posta is a small municipality in the province of Rieti, nestled in the Upper Velino Valley along the ancient Via Salaria route in north-eastern Lazio.
The feast of Saint Barbara, celebrated on December 4th, is deeply rooted in Italian popular culture. Venerated as the protector against the dangers of fire and the patron saint of miners, artillerymen, and firefighters, the saint is at the center of heartfelt celebrations in many towns across the Apennines. In Posta, the festival combines the liturgical aspect, with mass and rites in honor of the patron saint, with the civil and popular dimension of the fair that has accompanied this date for generations.
The core of the event is the fair itself: along the streets of the center and in Piazza degli Eroi, vendors set up stalls offering a wide variety of goods. Among the stalls, you can find:
The Santa Barbara Fair is organized under the coordination of the Municipality of Posta, which prepares the necessary measures to welcome visitors and exhibitors each year, including traffic and parking regulations in Piazza degli Eroi during the event. For the inhabitants of the village and neighboring towns, the fair is a social gathering and a moment that marks the beginning of the Christmas season while strengthening the bond with their roots.
Visiting the Santa Barbara Fair is also an opportunity to discover Posta and its surroundings. The village lies in a mountainous area of great scenic value, among the peaks of the central Apennines, in a part of the province of Rieti known for its pristine nature and food and wine traditions. The event, simple and authentic, reflects the spirit of these inland Lazio locations, where patronal feasts remain a strong identity-defining moment for small communities.
The 2026 edition of the Santa Barbara Fair in Posta has not yet been officially announced. As per tradition, the event is expected for early December, on the occasion of the patron saint's feast, with the fair in Piazza degli Eroi and celebrations in her honor. Dates and the program will be published by the Municipality of Posta in the weeks leading up to the event.
Posta can be reached by car along the Strada Statale 4 Via Salaria, which connects Rieti to Ascoli Piceno; the village is about 30 km from Rieti. The nearest train station is in Rieti, served by regional connections, from where you can continue by car or public transport.
The fair is traditionally held at the beginning of December, on the occasion of the feast of Saint Barbara (December 4th). The dates for the 2026 edition will be announced by the Municipality of Posta.
Admission to the fair is free. During the event days, parking regulations in Piazza degli Eroi will change: it is recommended to follow the signs and municipal notices.
