The patronal feast of Montereale in the heart of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park
Beato Andrea is the patron saint of Montereale, a mountain municipality in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, situated at an altitude of approximately 948 meters within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. Born in Mascioni around 1402-1404 to a modest family, Andrea entered the Augustinian monastery of Montereale at just fourteen years old. He studied theology in Rimini, Padua, Ferrara, and Siena, where he earned the title of Master of Sacred Theology. He served multiple times as the provincial of Umbria and as Vicar General, tasked with reforming the convents of Norcia, Amatrice, and Cerreto di Spoleto. He died in Montereale in April 1479, and his cult was approved by Pope Clement XIII in 1764.
The liturgical feast of the Beato falls on April 18th, but in Montereale, the most heartfelt celebration takes place on September 13th. This date commemorates a miraculous event linked to the earthquake that struck the L'Aquila area between the late 17th and early 18th centuries: according to popular tradition, the Beato's right hand rose from his tomb to protect the village. Even today, the faithful are struck by how that right hand remains slightly raised above the rest of his body, as if in an act of perpetual blessing.
Alongside its religious dimension, the festival preserves an ancient rural soul. During the days dedicated to Beato Andrea, and particularly on September 13th, the urn holding the saint's remains is opened, and the historic livestock and goods fair is held. For centuries, this has been one of the most important economic and social gatherings in the L'Aquila mountains. Stalls, an animal market, local produce, and traditional crafts bring the village to life, attracting visitors from neighboring towns.
The heart of the celebrations is the 18th-century Church of Beato Andrea, which houses a rich polychrome marble shrine and the precious silver urn containing the patron's remains, placed in a chapel that has been embellished over the centuries. The sanctuary, recognized for its importance as early as the 1700s, is a pilgrimage destination and a point of identity for the entire Montereale community.
Participating in the Beato Andrea Festival means discovering an authentic territory, set between the peaks of the Gran Sasso and the Monti della Laga, where centuries-old devotion intertwines with the life of a mountain village and landscapes of great natural value. A patronal feast that remains faithful to its roots and tells the deepest story of inland Abruzzo.
The 2026 Beato Andrea Festival takes place on Sunday, September 13th in Montereale, in the province of L'Aquila. The date upholds the centuries-old tradition that marks this day as the anniversary linked to the earthquake episode, when, according to popular devotion, the Beato's hand rose to protect the village.
The day includes religious services in honor of the patron saint, the opening of the silver urn kept in the 18th-century Church of Beato Andrea, and the historic livestock and goods fair, featuring stalls, local products, and traditional crafts. The detailed program, with times for celebrations and side initiatives, will be published by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event.
Montereale is located in the upper L'Aquila area, in the province of L'Aquila. By car, it can be reached via the SS 260 Picente, which connects L'Aquila to Amatrice and the Rieti area; from the A24 motorway, take the L'Aquila Ovest exit and continue north. The reference railway station is L'Aquila, from where you can continue by bus or car.
The patronal feast is celebrated every year on September 13th. A second opening of the urn and a fair also take place around September 30th.
The village is located in the mountains at about 950 meters: even in September, comfortable clothing and a jacket for cool evenings are recommended. Admission to the religious celebrations and the fair is free.
