A festive Christmas village in the heart of L'Aquila's historic center
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the historic center of L'Aquila, the capital of the Abruzzo region, Piazza Duomo lights up with festive magic every December with its Christmas Markets. Traditional wooden chalets, reminiscent of Northern European markets, surround the center of the square and extend along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, creating a mosaic of warm lights, spicy aromas, and local flavors.
The chalets host merchants, artisans, and hobbyists offering handmade goods, gift ideas, and the best local products. Among the stalls, you can discover Abruzzo's food and wine excellence: L'Aquila saffron, nougat, cheeses and cured meats, honey, farro, and the renowned mountain lentils. There is also no shortage of the famous Castelli ceramics, wooden and copper home accessories, and handmade jewelry, all authentic testaments to the region's artistic crafts.
The atmosphere becomes even more enchanting thanks to the large ice skating rink set up in Piazza Duomo and the Ferris wheel, which offers a panoramic view of the festively illuminated historic center. These are the most beloved attractions for families and children, bringing the square to life throughout the Christmas season.
The Piazza Duomo Christmas Markets have become a consolidated tradition of L'Aquila's winter, offering a chance to experience the city's historic center—restored after the 2009 earthquake—in a festive and welcoming way. The event, promoted by the Municipality of L'Aquila together with trade and craft associations, is part of the city's wider calendar of Christmas initiatives, including shows, nativity scenes, and events for all ages. The markets typically run from early December until Epiphany.
In 2026, L'Aquila is the Italian Capital of Culture, a recognition that shines a spotlight on the entire city and the province of L'Aquila during a year packed with events, exhibitions, music, and performances. In this context, the markets and holiday initiatives take on even greater significance as a way to celebrate the historic center and its traditions.
The dates and official program for the 2026 edition of the Piazza Duomo Christmas Markets in L'Aquila have not yet been released. Following the tradition of previous years, the markets are expected to enliven Piazza Duomo and Corso Vittorio Emanuele during the Christmas season, featuring wooden chalets, handicrafts, and typical Abruzzo products.
