A month of Christmas in a mountain village

Leonessa is Christmas is the widespread calendar of holiday events that brings the historic center of Leonessa, in the province of Rieti, northern Lazio, to life. It is not just a single market, but a program that spans over a month: from the lighting of the tree in early December until the Epiphany. The streets, squares, and churches of the village become a backdrop of lights, flavors, and traditions in a town that, at an altitude of 970 meters, often enjoys the beauty of snow.

Lights, trees, and nativity scenes

The festivities kick off with the lighting of the tree and the Piedelpoggio nativity scene, along with the tree in San Clemente, followed by an evening polenta feast that warms up the first night of celebrations. Festive lights line the entrance avenue, from Corso San Giuseppe to Piazza VII Aprile, the heart of all the activities.

The nativity scene exhibition then opens in the church of San Francesco, continuing throughout the holiday period and turning the building into a small gallery of traditional craftsmanship. Leonessa holds an important devotional heritage linked to the figure of Saint Joseph of Leonessa, and the nativity scene here is a form of folk art passed down from generation to generation.

Markets and local products

The most anticipated moment for food lovers is the inauguration of the Local Products Market, which is held in the final days of December and returns for full-day events on subsequent dates. Among the stalls, you can find products from the Leonessa plateau and the Reatini Mountains:

• mountain cured meats and sausages, with the sausage being the star of the square bonfires
• cheeses and ricotta from local farms
• the famous Leonessa potato, a signature product of the territory
• honey, legumes, and preserves from the Apennines
• handicrafts, Christmas decorations, and gift ideas

Square celebrations, music, and children

The calendar alternates between social gatherings and entertainment. Highlights include the symbolic arrival of Santa Claus with the delivery of letters and hot chocolate in the square, screenings at the local cinema, bonfires and sausages in the main square, fairy-tale shows for children, the Saint Stephen's Day toast, and the Christmas tombola party. The band concert in the church of San Pietro accompanies a charming walk with mulled wine towards the center, while New Year's Eve features a card tournament, a torchlight procession by the CAI on the snow, music, and a DJ set in the square.

From New Year's to the Epiphany

The celebrations do not stop with the midnight toast: in the first days of January, the markets remain open and the program continues until the Epiphany, with initiatives dedicated to children on January 5th and 6th. It is the moment when the village, often dusted with snow, offers its most fairy-tale image, much loved by visitors arriving from Rome, Rieti, and Umbria.

Leonessa, gateway to the plateau

Leonessa is one of the most beautiful villages in northern Lazio: founded in the 13th century, it preserves a regular urban layout, porticoes, Gothic churches, and a plateau that becomes a destination for snowshoeing in winter. Its proximity to Terminillo and the Campo Stella ski area makes it natural to combine a visit to the markets with a day in the snow. For the Leonessa community, Christmas is also the time when emigrants return and the hamlets reunite: hence the authentic, non-touristy character of the event.
