About Cabbia Potato Festival

The Cabbia Potato Festival celebrates the local potato, a historic agricultural product of the small mountain village of Cabbia, a hamlet of Montereale in the province of L'Aquila. Revived after a fifty-year hiatus, the festival takes place on the first Sunday of October, during the harvest season, and features tastings of traditional dishes made with the cajana potato, live music, photo exhibitions on field work, and workshops for children dedicated to the Apennine rural culture.

A rediscovered rural tradition

The Cabbia Potato Festival is the harvest celebration of the small mountain village of Cabbia, a hamlet of the municipality of Montereale in the province of L'Aquila, in the heart of the Abruzzo Apennines. Perched on a rocky spur over a thousand meters above sea level in the upper Aterno Valley, Cabbia preserves a long agricultural tradition: for centuries, the potato, along with corn, was one of the main sources of sustenance for the village families. Revived after a fifty-year hiatus, the festival now restores value and memory to this local produce and the work of our ancestors.

The cajana potato, the star of the festival

At the heart of the event is the cajana potato, grown in the high mountains by the local community on the village lands. The harvested potatoes are used to prepare traditional dishes served during the grand dinner in the square, the highlight of the day: a menu of rural tradition that combines genuine flavors and conviviality. The distribution of cajana potatoes, an authentic identity product of the L'Aquila Apennines, accompanies the festival and strengthens the bond between the inhabitants and their land.

Tastings, music, and memory

The Potato Festival is not just about gastronomy. The program weaves together the table and popular culture, offering:

  • tastings of traditional dishes based on the local potato;
  • live music in the square;
  • photo exhibitions dedicated to field work and the rural life of the past;
  • workshops for children on the rural culture of the Abruzzo Apennines.

It is an opportunity to rediscover the ancient gestures of cultivation, from sowing to harvesting, and to pass on the roots of a mountain community to new generations.

A village that reunites

Like other festivals in Cabbia, the Potato Festival also calls back those who have emigrated and their families, transforming the day into a great reunion for the entire community of the upper Aterno Valley. Immersed in the mountain landscape of the Municipality of Montereale and the most authentic Abruzzo, the festival is an invitation to discover a little-known corner of the province of L'Aquila, where tradition, nature, and genuine flavors intertwine in the name of the potato.
