The theatre and music festival at the Teatro Comunale in Cavriglia, in the heart of the Valdarno area near Arezzo
In Cavriglia, a small town in the province of Arezzo nestled among the hills of the upper Valdarno, spring brings with it a theatre season that has become a highly anticipated event. Spring at the Theatre transforms the Teatro Comunale in Piazza Berlinguer into a gathering place for fans of prose, music, and folk traditions, with a programme that weaves together local talent and productions that reach beyond the borders of Tuscany.
The identity of Spring at the Theatre lies in a precise choice: giving space to the artistic energy of the Valdarno. Local theatre companies, area musicians, cultural associations, and projects by the new generation find a real stage here. However, there is no shortage of international reach, with international guests and national premieres that bring breadth and ambition to the programme.
The festival is promoted by the Municipality of Cavriglia in collaboration with Materiali Sonori, a historic record label and cultural entity that has been operating in the Valdarno for decades and oversees the artistic direction and organization of the season.
The programme alternates between brilliant comedies, authorial monologues, concerts, and performances of dance and folk tradition. One of the most deeply felt themes is the memory of the region: in Cavriglia, a land marked by the history of lignite mines, the shows often weave together civic storytelling and local identity, returning pieces of their collective history to the audience.
With low-cost tickets and some events offering free admission, Spring at the Theatre confirms its popular and inclusive vocation. It is an opportunity to discover a vibrant, deep-rooted provincial theatre, far from the major circuits but capable of offering quality evenings just a stone's throw from Arezzo, San Giovanni Valdarno, and Montevarchi.
The 2026 edition of Spring at the Theatre brought eleven events to the stage of the Teatro Comunale in Cavriglia between April 2 and June 4, confirming the formula that weaves together local talent and new productions. Promoted by the Municipality of Cavriglia and Materiali Sonori, the season alternated between prose, singer-songwriter music, brilliant comedy, and international folk tradition.
Among the most heartfelt moments were the show Dragogeno โ The piece of lignite that refused to be burned, which drew on the mining memory of the territory, and the national premiere of Vertigo โ Anatomy of a lie. The festival closed on June 4 with the show What are the gods for.
Cavriglia is located in the Valdarno area of Arezzo and is easily accessible by car from the A1 motorway exits of Valdarno (Incisa-Reggello) or Arezzo. The Teatro Comunale is in Piazza Berlinguer 1, in the town centre. By train, the reference station is San Giovanni Valdarno, on the Florence-Arezzo-Rome line, with a bus connection available.
Tickets are affordably priced (generally between 5 and 10 euros, with reduced rates for online purchases); some events offer free admission. Online pre-sale is available on dedicated platforms; information and reservations via email at [email protected] or by phone.
Evening shows generally start in the evening, while some afternoon events are designed for families and young people. It is recommended to book in advance for the most popular shows.
