The durum wheat festival in the heart of the Madonie, in Valledolmo
The Spiga Festival is a traditional celebration held in Valledolmo, a small village in the Province of Palermo nestled at the foot of the Madonie mountains in Sicily. The event celebrates the spiga (wheat stalk), the ultimate symbol of rural civilization and the deep bond between this town and the cultivation of Sicilian durum wheat. In a region where agriculture has shaped the landscape and daily life for centuries, the festival renews the memory of ancient harvesting techniques and the wheat cycle every year.
Founded in the 17th century as an agricultural hub, Valledolmo still maintains a strong rural identity. The town is renowned for its gastronomic excellence: the siccagno tomato and its derivatives, durum wheat pasta, extra virgin olive oil, and wines from local cellars, which are part of the Contea di Sclafani DOC. The Spiga Festival serves as a moment to rediscover these farming roots, where the community gathers to honor the land and its fruits.
The festival enlivens the town center, with Piazza Trappeto and the surrounding streets closed to traffic and transformed into a meeting space. The day combines folk tradition, local products, and convivial moments in an authentic atmosphere far from the typical tourist circuits.
Attending the Spiga Festival is also a chance to get to know Valledolmo, the home of the siccagno tomato and a gateway to the Madonie Park. Now in its sixteenth edition, the event confirms the vitality of a small community that continues to preserve and pass down its agricultural traditions, distinguishing itself from the better-known festival of the same name in Gangi.
The 16th edition of the Spiga Festival was held in Valledolmo on June 6, 2026. For the occasion, the Municipality ordered the closure of Piazza Trappeto and Via Piave, the heart of the celebrations, to vehicular traffic. The day renewed the tradition linked to wheat and harvesting, with tastings of local products and entertainment in the town center, confirming the festival's role as a key identity event for the Valledolmo community.
Valledolmo can be reached by car via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Tremonzelli or Caltavuturo exit), continuing along inland roads towards the Madonie. The most convenient train station is Roccapalumba-Alia, on the Palermo-Agrigento line.
The festival is held in the historic center, with its epicenter in Piazza Trappeto and adjacent streets, which are closed to vehicular traffic for the occasion.
