The road race that runs through the city of the gladiators, from the Arch of Hadrian to the Campanian Amphitheatre
The Spartacus Run is the road race that brings Santa Maria Capua Vetere, in the province of Caserta, to life every autumn in the heart of Campania. Established in 2023 by the A.S.D. Podistica Sammaritana, led by Giovanni Grimaldi, the event has maintained a clear identity from the start: it is not just any race, but one that physically traverses the city's history. The name is no mere marketing ploy. Santa Maria Capua Vetere stands on the site of ancient Capua, the Capua Felix that was once among the wealthiest cities in the Roman world, and it housed the gladiatorial school from which the revolt led by Spartacus began in 73 BC.
The course measures approximately 10 kilometres (9.9 km according to the official federal calendar) and runs entirely through city streets. The start is located at the foot of the imposing Arch of Hadrian, the monument that marked the monumental entrance to ancient Capua along the Appian Way; the finish, which is the true highlight of the day, takes place within the setting of the Campanian Amphitheatre, the second-largest Roman amphitheatre in the world after the Colosseum.
Between these two landmarks, the route touches the main arteries of the centre: via Domenico Russo, Corso Aldo Moro, via Roberto d'Angiò, via Luigi De Michele, via Emanuele Fardella, via Pratilli, Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi, and Viale Consiglio d'Europa, with traffic closed for the duration of the race and progressively reopened as athletes pass. It is a flat, fast course designed—as the organisers repeat—to balance personal best times with a spectacular atmosphere, as runners alternate between modern vistas and archaeological landmarks within just a few kilometres.
The progression of registrations clearly illustrates the event's trajectory: 800 athletes at the first edition in 2023, 1,000 in 2024, and 1,200 in 2025, with over four hundred requests left on the waiting list. However, the organising club has chosen not to turn the Spartacus Run into a mass-participation event: the participant cap remains intentionally limited to ensure grid space, safety along the route, and orderly management of refreshments and services.
The event's hallmark comes after the race. The prize-giving ceremony takes place in front of the Campanian Amphitheatre and is accompanied by costumed fighters from the Pro Loco Spartacus and the Santa Maria Capua Vetere School of Gladiators, who stage combat demonstrations. The finisher medal also features the iconography of Spartacus: an object that Campanian runners have come to recognise and collect.
The Spartacus Run is a regional road race under the aegis of FIDAL and serves as a stage of the ASI running circuit, awarding national titles across categories: from Juniors and Promises to Seniors, and all male and female master age groups (SM35-SM80 and above, FM35-FM80 and above). There is also a team ranking, which has seen over one hundred clubs from across Campania and neighbouring regions at the starting line over the years.
Those arriving in Santa Maria Capua Vetere to run will find some of the most remarkable archaeological sites in the municipality and the entire province of Caserta just a few steps from the finish line:
The city is also just minutes away from Caserta and its Royal Palace, making it easy to turn race Sunday into a weekend visit to the Caserta area.
Following the record participation of 2025, the Spartacus Run is preparing for its 4th edition on the streets of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, in the province of Caserta. The organising club, A.S.D. Podistica Sammaritana, has already announced the date for November 2026 with the start set for 8:00 AM; the federal road race calendar indicates Sunday, November 15, 2026, and an official distance of 9.9 km.
Operational details—the definitive route, registration opening and fees, meeting points, and bib collection times—are yet to be communicated and will be released on the club's official channels in the weeks leading up to the race. Based on the three editions already held, the event's structure is well-established: a start from the historic centre, a flat route through the city streets, a finish in front of the Campanian Amphitheatre, and prize-giving ceremonies accompanied by costumed fighters.
The Spartacus Run is a road race under the aegis of FIDAL and a stage of the ASI running circuit, open to adult Italian and foreign athletes holding a valid competitive medical certificate. The number of bibs is limited: in recent editions, registrations closed early, with hundreds of requests left on the waiting list.
The detailed programme for the fourth edition has not yet been published. Currently, there are two official elements: the announcement by Podistica Sammaritana, which places the Spartacus Run 2026 in November 2026 with a start at 8:00 AM, and the race's inclusion in the federal road race calendar on Sunday, November 15, 2026, over a distance of 9.9 km in Santa Maria Capua Vetere.
Meeting times, the final route, registration procedures, and the prize-giving schedule will be announced by the organisers on their official channels and the dedicated Instagram page for the event.
By train: the Santa Maria Capua Vetere station is served by the Naples-Caserta-Cassino regional line; from the station, the centre and the Campanian Amphitheatre can be reached on foot in a few minutes.
By car: take the Santa Maria Capua Vetere exit on the A1/Caserta support axis, or the Capua exit on the A1 motorway. On race days, several city centre streets are closed to traffic from the early morning: it is advisable to park in peripheral areas and walk to the start.
By plane: Naples-Capodichino airport, approximately 35 km away.
The race is reserved for adult athletes, both Italian and foreign, who hold a valid competitive medical certificate. Registrations are capped and close early once the participant limit is reached. Information and forms are available through the A.S.D. Podistica Sammaritana ([email protected], WhatsApp +39 347 7224800) and the official Spartacus Run social media channels.
For the public, watching the race along the route and attending the prize-giving ceremony in front of the Campanian Amphitheatre is free of charge.
