About South Tyrol Speck Festival

Every late September, the panoramic summit of Plan de Corones, at an altitude of 2,275 meters, hosts the South Tyrol Speck Festival PGI: two days of guided tastings, production demonstrations, local craft markets, and traditional live music. Organized by the South Tyrol Speck Consortium in the municipality of Marebbe, in the province of Bolzano, the event combines the flavor of South Tyrol's iconic cured meat with unique Dolomite views, easily accessible via cable car.

The Speck Festival on the roof of the Dolomites

The South Tyrol Speck Festival PGI is the annual food and wine event that celebrates the iconic cured meat of South Tyrolean gastronomy every late September, right on the summit of Plan de Corones (known as Kronplatz in German) at 2,275 meters. The event takes place in the municipality of Marebbe, in the province of Bolzano, the heart of Trentino-South Tyrol, transforming the mountain into a grand stage of taste overlooking the Dolomites for an entire weekend.

A product, a territory

The absolute star is South Tyrol Speck PGI, crafted through traditional methods that combine light smoking with mountain air curing. The festival is organized by the South Tyrol Speck Consortium in collaboration with the Plan de Corones Dolomite region, with the goal of showcasing the culture, history, and production methods that make this product one of the most authentic ambassadors of the South Tyrolean territory.

What to expect at the festival

  • Guided tastings of South Tyrol Speck PGI, often paired with local cheeses and South Tyrolean wines;
  • Demonstrations of traditional speck production and curing;
  • The traditional slicing of the speck slab that officially opens the event;
  • Market stalls featuring local zero-kilometer products and handicrafts;
  • Regional speck-based dishes prepared by mountain hut chefs and volunteers;
  • A rich program of traditional live music, including brass bands, folk musicians, and Schuhplattler dancers.

Panorama and conviviality

What makes the Speck Festival unique is its setting: at over 2,000 meters, visitors can combine the pleasure of fine dining with a 360-degree panorama of the Dolomite peaks. The atmosphere is the convivial and genuine one of South Tyrolean mountain festivals, where folk traditions, music, and gastronomy intertwine in an experience designed for families, hikers, and food enthusiasts.

The summit of Plan de Corones is easily reached by cable car from San Vigilio di Marebbe, Brunico/Riscone, and Valdaora/Casola. In case of bad weather, the event is moved to the center of Brunico, with the program and gastronomic offerings remaining unchanged.
