The Cianaluca District, a rural hamlet of Campomarino in the province of Campobasso, preserves an ancient tradition that is renewed every January 16th, the day of Saint Anthony Abbot. The district group carries forward the begging song with voices, steps, and devotion, in a rite rooted in the peasant culture of Adriatic Molise.
From House to House
The group travels through the district's streets, visiting homes, accompanied by the accordion and other traditional folk instruments. At each stop, the singers perform songs dedicated to the saint, and families reciprocate with simple but significant food offerings.
A Shared Tradition
The rite in Cianaluca takes place on the same day and with the same structure as the similar tradition in Nuova Cliternia, another hamlet of Campomarino: two twin expressions of a single peasant heritage, both documented in the 2026 edition. Saint Anthony Abbot, protector of animals and fire, is the central figure of this popular heritage that intertwines faith, music, and hospitality.
