The classical music series showcasing young local talent alongside professional musicians.
The Solofra City Music Festival—known locally simply as the "Music Festival"—is a classical and chamber music series promoted by the Municipality of Solofra, in the heart of Irpinia, in the province of Avellino, Campania. Far from being a summer event, it takes place during the holiday season, when the town lights up for its Christmas calendar, spanning several evenings between December and early January.
The core concept is simple yet rare for a municipal event: rather than just hosting pre-packaged concerts, it creates a stage for the young musicians of Solofra, allowing them to perform side-by-side with professional instrumentalists. The result is a festival that the local audience feels is their own, as they see familiar faces on stage, while maintaining a musical standard that is surprising for a town of just over twelve thousand inhabitants.
Since 2023, artistic direction has been entrusted to local guitarist Giovanni Masi, who is also a regular performer at the festival. He curates the programs, bridging the two souls of the event: the young local students and the professional guest musicians. The latter have included, for example, guitarist Lucio Matarazzo, a renowned name in the Neapolitan guitar school, who was invited for the edition dedicated to Vivaldi.
The festival moves between two city venues, both in the center of Solofra:
These are intimate spaces, making the performances a close-up experience: you can hear the breath of the instruments, and it is common to chat with the performers at the end of the evening.
The heart of the programming is classical and baroque music, but without rigidity. The December 2024 edition was built around the theme "Vivaldi: Between Strings and Chords", featuring an ensemble of string quartet, harpsichord, and guitars; the final evening in January was titled "Beyond Classical...", signaling an openness to lighter repertoires and the dialogue between different instruments—flute, violin, guitar, and piano.
Solofra is a center with an ancient tanning tradition, nestled between the Picentini mountains and the valley descending toward Salerno. Its most famous monument is the Collegiate Church of San Michele Arcangelo, featuring an extraordinary cycle of 17th-century paintings by Francesco Guarini. The city's calendar traditionally revolves around the patronal feast in June. The Music Festival represents the winter counterpoint to that popular, festive dimension: more intimate, more refined, yet equally rooted in the community.
The Solofra City Music Festival concluded its winter journey on Friday, January 2, 2026, at 7:00 PM, in the Town Hall's Sala Maggiore. The evening was presented as the "second part" of the series, designed to focus on young people and their talent, and to offer them a space to express themselves alongside renowned professionals.
The stage featured Antonella Bonocore, Fabiola Nicodemo, Michele Caiafa, Francesca Del Vacchio, Giovanni Masi, and Simone Giliberti: a musical journey that local reports described as marked by sensitivity and passion, born from the local area but with an eye toward the future.
The event was part of the Christmas program of the Municipality of Solofra, in the province of Avellino, and confirmed the festival's formula: city venues, chamber ensembles, barrier-free access, and constant attention to the local music school.
By car: Solofra is reached via the Salerno-Avellino motorway junction (RA2), which has a dedicated exit; from Naples, take the A16 to Avellino and then continue toward Salerno, for a total of about 60 km. By train: the city is served by the Salerno-Avellino railway line, with limited service—it is advisable to check the schedules in advance. By plane: the reference airport is Naples-Capodichino, about an hour's drive away.
The evenings are held in the Sala Maggiore of the Solofra Town Hall and the Church of Santa Chiara, at Via Regina Margherita 3, both in the city center and within walking distance of each other.
Local sources indicate free admission for the festival concerts (the 2024 edition at the Church of Santa Chiara was marked as free entry). Since the venues have limited capacity, it is advisable to arrive a few minutes early and check access procedures with the Municipality of Solofra or the Proloco Solofra (tel. +39 0825 582411, [email protected]).
The festival falls in the middle of the Christmas season: combining the concert with a walk through the historic center and a visit to the Collegiate Church of San Michele Arcangelo, with its paintings by Francesco Guarini, is the best way to enjoy the evening. The churches are not heated like concert halls: it is best to dress in layers.
