The Solemnity of Saint Lawrence is the feast day of the patron saint of the Cathedral of Saint Lawrence in Perugia, the majestic Gothic church that overlooks Piazza IV Novembre, in the heart of the Umbrian capital's historic center. Celebrated every August 10th, the occasion is one of the most important events in the liturgical calendar of the Archdiocese of Perugia-Città della Pieve.
The Deacon of Charity
Saint Lawrence, a deacon and martyr of the 3rd century, is revered as the deacon of charity par excellence: for this reason, the diocesan tradition chooses his liturgical day to celebrate diaconal ordinations. In Perugia, the saint has for centuries been counted among the city's protectors, alongside Saint Constantius and Saint Herculanus, the three saints that tradition links to the capital's religious identity.
A Festival Uniting Liturgy and Heritage
The celebrations begin with the First Vespers on the vigil and culminate on August 10th with the solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by the Archbishop. Around the festival, the Cathedral and its Chapter Museum often offer evening openings and tours to discover the complex's treasures, including works of art and the precious wooden choir. It is an opportunity to experience the spiritual dimension of the commemoration and, at the same time, to rediscover one of Perugia's symbolic monuments.

The Solemnity of Saint Lawrence 2026 is celebrated in Perugia on August 9th and 10th, in the Cathedral of Saint Lawrence in Piazza IV Novembre. On the vigil, August 9th, the First Vespers are held; on the feast day, August 10th, the solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by the Archbishop takes place, following the tradition that links the day of Saint Lawrence, deacon of charity, also to the diaconal ordinations of the diocese.
