About Sant'Ercolano

On November 7th, Perugia remembers Saint Herculanus, bishop and martyr, defensor civitatis and patron of the city and the University. The festival, with a strong religious focus, takes place on the weekend following his dies natalis with solemn masses in the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the church dedicated to the Saint, animated by city choirs and celebrated in the presence of civil, academic authorities and the Sodalizio di San Martino.

Saint Herculanus, defensor civitatis

Along with Saint Constantius and Saint Lawrence, Saint Herculanus is one of the patrons of Perugia. A bishop and martyr, traditionally killed during the Gothic siege of the city in the 6th century, he is venerated as defensor civitatis, defender of the community, and is also the patron of the University of Perugia. His dies natalis, meaning the day of his martyrdom, falls on November 7th.

A festival in the city's religious heart

The celebrations are concentrated on the weekend following November 7th and take place in the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the evocative Church of Saint Herculanus, a Gothic jewel overlooking the steps leading down to Corso Cavour. The solemn masses, animated by city choirs such as the Madrigalisti di Perugia, are presided over by the Archbishop in the presence of civil and academic authorities and representatives of the Sodalizio di San Martino.

Memory and civic identity

The figure of Saint Herculanus remains deeply linked to the identity of Perugia and its university: a defender of the city in times of siege, he is today a symbol of shared memory that unites the religious community, institutions, and the university world. A second celebration, the dies translationis, occurs on March 1st.
