The grand late-July festival in Montesarchio, featuring processions, brass bands, illuminations, and fireworks

The Solemn Celebrations in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Anthony of Padua are the most anticipated summer event in Montesarchio, a town in the province of Benevento, Campania, nestled at the foot of the Taburno massif at the entrance to the Caudina Valley. On the final evenings, the town squares fill with thousands of visitors from across the Sannio and Irpinia regions; in 2025, the closing concert drew an estimated crowd of fifteen thousand people. As noted by the Festival Committee, "the Carmine festival is increasingly becoming a point of reference, a center of unity and communion" for the Montesarchio community.
Everything revolves around the monumental Church of San Francesco, which houses the venerated image of the Virgin of Mount Carmel. The spiritual journey is long and precisely marked: the novena begins around July 16th, the liturgical memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, featuring the Rosary, novena prayers, Holy Mass, and Eucharistic benediction in the late afternoon. This is followed by a triduum of preparation in the days immediately preceding the festival, with the Rosary at 6:00 PM and Holy Mass at 6:30 PM. On the main Sunday, the church remains open from the early morning hours, with Masses held almost hourly as the faithful bring their offerings to the Virgin and Saint Anthony.
The most intense moment is the Sunday evening procession, which winds through the center of Montesarchio from sunset until nightfall. The statue of the Madonna is carried on a papier-mâché float depicting Mount Carmel, accompanied by the image of Saint Simon Stock, the Carmelite saint associated with the tradition of the scapular—a sign that, according to popular devotion, reminds the faithful that the Virgin Mary watches over them as her children. Beside the statue walk the parish priest, clergy, confraternities, and civil, religious, and military authorities, while the pageant is accompanied by the «Giuseppe Verdi» Band of Montesarchio, often joined by guest bands invited for the occasion.
The secular program is the second soul of the festival and boasts a high-level musical tradition typical of Campanian patronal feasts. The final days feature a rotation of:
Throughout the festivities, «Braceria sotto le stelle» (Grill under the stars) lights up in Piazza Umberto I—an open-air dining area that accompanies the celebrations. It serves sliced beef, burgers, local Sannio sausage, and grilled dishes until late at night, amidst the glowing illuminations and the strolling crowds. It is the perfect, informal way to sample the products of the Caudina Valley and the Sannio region.
The official opening of the secular festivities coincides with the switching on of the illuminations, which transform alleys and squares into a path of light. The grand finale is entrusted to the spectacular midnight fireworks display on the last evening: a pyromusical show curated by Campanian pyrotechnic firms, awaited by a crowd that gathers along the town streets to bid each other farewell until the following year.
The local religious calendar is rich throughout the year—from the feast of Saint Joseph in March to the Most Holy Trinity, from Saint Anthony in June to the Assumption in August, and finally the patron saint Saint Nicholas of Bari in December—but it is the Carmel festival in late July that defines the Montesarchio summer, in a village that climbs the hillside with open views over the Caudina Valley and the Taburno.
The festival is traditionally concentrated in the last days of July, with the procession on the final Sunday. Those seeking the devotional side should focus on the church celebrations and the pageant; those preferring the atmosphere of a popular street festival should arrive for the evenings in the square, with bands, concerts, and fireworks. On peak nights, the center is closed to traffic and very crowded: it is advisable to arrive early.
The Carmel festival is a fixed appointment on the calendar of Montesarchio, in the Benevento Sannio, and is repeated every year in the second half of July with the novena, the triduum of preparation, the Sunday evening procession, and musical evenings in the square.
For the 2026 edition, official dates and a published program are not yet available; the information provided refers to previous editions. Those wishing to plan their visit can refer to the San Giovanni Battista Parish and the Committee for the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Anthony of Padua, which publish the details of religious celebrations and performances annually. This page will be updated as soon as the official program is available.
Montesarchio is located in the Caudina Valley, along the historic Appian Way (SS 7) between Benevento and Naples. By car, it is easily reached from both cities in about 30-50 minutes. By train, the town is served by the Montesarchio railway station on the Benevento-Cancello line, with regional connections; from the station, the historic center can be reached in a few minutes.
On the main evenings, the center is subject to traffic closures and a high influx of visitors: it is best to leave your car in parking areas outside the old town and continue on foot.
Religious celebrations, the procession, brass band concerts, the lyrical-symphonic gala, and square performances are traditionally free of charge. Only food and drinks at the «Braceria sotto le stelle» area are paid according to the menu.
Wear comfortable shoes: the procession and the path of the illuminations are on sloping streets. For the fireworks evening, it is best to find a spot well in advance. The detailed program is released every year via posters displayed in town and on the parish and Festival Committee channels.
