About Soffritto Festival

Every year on the second Sunday of September, the village of Santa Marina fills with the aroma of soffritto. This highly anticipated end-of-summer festival celebrates a humble traditional Cilento dish, served hot in a sandwich and paired with local wine, folk music, and singing. It is a simple, authentic village feast with free admission, organized by the ATAS association with the support of the Municipality of Santa Marina, in the province of Salerno, which celebrated its 44th edition in 2025.

A festival that smells like September

As summer begins to fade in the Gulf of Policastro, Santa Marina gathers locals, returning emigrants, and last-minute holidaymakers for the Soffritto Festival. The event traditionally falls on the second Sunday of September and takes place in the center of the municipal capital, at an altitude of 415 meters, in a square that suddenly transforms into a large open-air kitchen. In 2025, the event celebrated its 44th edition: a milestone that speaks volumes about the continuity of a festival born as a community ritual and which has become one of the most recognizable gastronomic events in southern Cilento over the years.

Soffritto, a humble dish of identity

The absolute star is 'o suffritto, a dish from the Campanian culinary tradition built on the art of not wasting anything: pork offal cooked for a long time in sauce, with chili, bay leaf, and herbs, until it becomes a thick, dark, and decidedly savory sauce. In the area of Santa Marina and Policastro Bussentino, soffritto is a taste of home, linked to the memories of farming families and the seasonality of pork. At the festival, it is served in the most direct and convivial way possible: inside a sandwich, hot, to be eaten while standing and strolling among the stalls, with a glass of local wine in hand.

  • Soffritto sandwiches prepared and served by volunteers
  • Local wine to complete the tasting
  • Folk music and singing to liven up the evening
  • Free admission, in the true spirit of a village feast

A village feast, not a show

The Soffritto Festival is not structured like a large-scale event: it is a community feast, with stalls managed by the organizing association and volunteers, tables set up for the occasion, and folk music accompanying the evening until late. Those arriving from outside will find exactly what they are looking for in an authentic Southern festival: generous portions, affordable prices, people who know each other, and the pleasure of tasting a recipe rarely found on the menus of tourist-trap restaurants along the coast.

Santa Marina, between hills and sea

The Municipality of Santa Marina, in the province of Salerno, Campania, is a small town of just over three thousand inhabitants overlooking the Gulf of Policastro, at the southern end of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The municipal territory combines two souls: the hilly capital, with its network of alleys and stone houses, and the hamlets of Policastro Bussentino, Lupinata, and Poria, the first of which is one of the most popular seaside resorts in the gulf. The patron saint is Saint Marina, celebrated on June 18th; the September festival, meanwhile, represents the moment the town bids farewell to the summer season.

Why it's worth the trip

For those spending their holidays between Sapri, Policastro, and the beaches of lower Cilento, the Soffritto Festival is the perfect opportunity to head into the hills and discover the less touristy side of the region. It is a short eventโ€”just one dayโ€”but packed with tradition: local gastronomy, folk music, and warm village hospitality. We recommend arriving early, as at festivals like this, the best soffritto is found in the first few hours, and because the historic center has limited space and fills up quickly.
