The grassroots community festival of the Salicelle district, featuring floats, murga bands, and local participation
The Social Carnival of Afragola, in the heart of the Rione Salicelle, is much more than a simple costume parade: it is a self-managed community festival, built every year by the residents of the neighborhood without public funding. Local associations, schools, parishes, and volunteer groups transform streets and squares into a large collective workshop, where children, teenagers, and adults work together to create allegorical floats, masks, and banners using recycled and low-cost materials.
The Afragola parade is one of the stops on the broader Social Carnival of the Metropolitan City of Naples, a network of processions that crosses Neapolitan neighborhoods and suburbs with dozens of events. The initiative is inspired by the long tradition of the Neapolitan popular carnival and the work of the GRIDAS in Scampia, bringing the dreams and demands of citizens to the streets with irony and joy.
The procession moves through the district's apartment blocks to the rhythm of the murga—percussion bands inspired by South American and Mediterranean traditions—with drums, tammorre, whistles, and confetti. Each edition is dedicated to a theme that gives the event its title: from peace to the defense of rights, social messages are woven into the festivities. Past editions have featured slogans such as "In a world of war, builders of peace" and "Rights and reverses. They cut the branches, the roots remain!"
Aimed primarily at families, children, and young people, the Salicelle Social Carnival is an opportunity for gathering and redemption for a suburb of Afragola, in the Metropolitan City of Naples. Participation is free and open to all: anyone can join the procession, dance, play music, and march alongside the residents of the district.
Located in the northern outskirts of Naples, Afragola is a populous municipality in Campania, also known for its high-speed railway station. The Social Carnival of Rione Salicelle represents one of the most genuine and well-attended events in the local calendar, capable of showcasing the energy and community spirit of an entire territory through celebration.
In 2026, the Afragola parade returned to color the Rione Salicelle on Tuesday, February 11, starting at 10:30 AM. As every year, allegorical floats, banners, and installations created by children, teenagers, schools, and neighborhood associations crossed the streets of the district to the rhythm of the murga. The Afragola event was included in the program of the Social Carnival of the Metropolitan City of Naples, which in 2026 featured twelve self-managed parades between Naples and its suburbs.
Afragola can be reached by car via the A1 motorway (Afragola exit) and the Asse Mediano. By train, the Napoli-Afragola AV station and regional lines connect the city to Naples; Rione Salicelle is located in the northern part of the town.
The event is free of charge, held outdoors, and open to everyone.
A family-friendly event: comfortable clothing, masks, and costumes are recommended to join the parade. Check the date and time on the social media channels of the Municipality of Afragola and the promoting associations.
