About Gnocchi Festival

Every May 1st, the meadow surrounding the Madonna del Campo Sanctuary, just a kilometer from the walled village of Vico nel Lazio, transforms into a sprawling open-air dining hall. Now in its twenty-first year in 2026, the Sheep Sauce Gnocchi Festival celebrates the signature dish of the Ciociaria pastoral tradition: handmade gnocchi tossed in a rich, savory sheep sauce, accompanied by grilled meats, asparagus frittata, fava beans with pecorino, and fine wine, all set against a stunning mountain backdrop at 762 meters above sea level.

A festival born in the shadow of a country sanctuary

The Sheep Sauce Gnocchi Festival is the event that has kicked off the popular festival season in Vico nel Lazio, a medieval village in the Ciociaria region of the Frosinone province, for over twenty years. Organized by the Madonna del Campo Committee, the event takes place every May 1st on the grassy clearing in front of the Madonna del Campo Sanctuary, a 15th-16th century country church located about a kilometer from the town at an altitude of 762 meters, on the slopes of the Ernici Mountains. In 2026, the festival reached the milestone of its twenty-first edition.

The dish: gnocchi and sheep sauce, a pastoral memory

Sheep sauce is one of the most iconic preparations of the Ernici Mountains' cuisine: a long, patient cooking process for mutton, a legacy of the pastoral civilization that has enlivened these plateaus for centuries. At the festival, the sauce dresses handmade gnocchi, also available with a classic ragù for those who prefer a more traditional taste. The festival menu is rounded out by grilled mutton and sausages, mountain asparagus frittata, fresh fava beans with pecorino, dessert, and local wine: an authentic peasant lunch served on the sanctuary's grass.

The May Day of the locals

The choice of date is no coincidence: for the community of Vico nel Lazio, May 1st has always been the day for an outing to the Madonna del Campo. The festival has given an organized structure to this custom, transforming it into a celebration open to everyone that attracts families and visitors from across the Frosinone province and the rest of Lazio. The day unfolds with lunch at the stands, music, and conviviality, with the sanctuary and surrounding meadows providing the perfect setting.

The sanctuary and the village

The Madonna del Campo Sanctuary, built according to tradition on a previous place of worship, houses a barrel-vaulted ceiling and a precious fresco of the Trinity featuring a rare depiction of Christ on the cross; the icon of the Virgin was highly venerated by shepherds, who sought her protection and fertility for their fields. Just a kilometer away lies Vico nel Lazio, one of the most evocative villages in Ciociaria: the medieval walls that embrace the entire town, the access gates (Porta Orticelli, Porta Guarcino, and Porta a Monte), the Collegiate Church of San Michele Arcangelo, and the 13th-century Governor's Palace are well worth a visit on their own.

Between the festival and hiking in the Ernici Mountains

The sanctuary's panoramic position makes it a starting point for numerous hikes toward the peaks of the Ernici Mountains, such as La Monna (1,951 meters), La Forchetta, and Rotonaria: many visitors combine the festival with a morning walk before sitting down to eat. Nearby, you can also reach the Certosa di Trisulti, the Pozzo d'Antullo in Collepardo, and the city of Alatri with its cyclopean walls in just a few minutes.

An event supported by the community

The festival is a direct expression of the local community: the Madonna del Campo Committee, with the support of the Municipality of Vico nel Lazio, oversees the preparation of the dishes and the hospitality every year. It is a genuine celebration, far from mass tourism circuits, where the Lazio region shows one of its most authentic faces: that of mountain villages and the cuisine of transhumance.

Gnocchi Festival — edition 2026

On Friday, May 1st, 2026, the Madonna del Campo Sanctuary in Vico nel Lazio hosted the 21st edition of the Sheep Sauce Gnocchi Festival. From 10:00 AM, the Madonna del Campo Committee served handmade gnocchi with sheep sauce or ragù, grilled mutton and sausages, asparagus frittata, fava beans and pecorino, dessert, and wine: the traditional Ciociarian May Day lunch on the sanctuary meadows, at 762 meters altitude.

The twenty-first edition of the festival took place on Friday, May 1st, 2026, in the usual setting of the Madonna del Campo Sanctuary, the 15th-16th century country church located one kilometer from the walled village of Vico nel Lazio, in the province of Frosinone. The celebration began at 10:00 AM and accompanied visitors throughout the day.

The absolute star was the menu of the Ernici pastoral tradition: handmade gnocchi dressed with sheep sauce (or, alternatively, ragù), grilled mutton and sausages, asparagus frittata, fresh fava beans with pecorino, and dessert, all washed down with local wine. As per tradition, the May Day event combined lunch at the stands, a picnic on the sanctuary meadows, and walks along the trails of the Ernici Mountains.
