About Sheep Festival

In the heart of the Ciociaria region, the Sheep Festival brings two evenings of celebration to the Strada Romana area of Castrocielo, in the province of Frosinone. Organized by the La Strada Romana association, the event celebrates one of the most iconic products of local rural tradition: sheep meat, the absolute star of every dish, from rigatoni with sheep ragù to grilled arrosticini. Music, dancing, and karaoke fill the evenings in Piazza Salvo D'Acquisto, with free admission for everyone.

The Sheep Festival in Castrocielo

In the Strada Romana area of Castrocielo, a small town in the province of Frosinone nestled between the Liri Valley and the slopes of the Cairo Mountains, the Sheep Festival comes to life. This new gastronomic event celebrates one of the most authentic flavors of the Ciociaria tradition. Now in its first edition, the festival takes place in Piazza Salvo D'Acquisto, transforming the neighborhood for two evenings into a large open-air gathering dedicated to good food and conviviality.

Sheep, the queen of the Ciociaria table

The absolute star is sheep meat, a humble yet flavorful ingredient deeply rooted in the pastoral culture of Ciociaria. For centuries, transhumance and sheep farming have defined the economy of these Apennine villages, and local cuisine preserves this memory through a series of robust and fragrant dishes. At the festival, sheep is served in all its most beloved preparations: rigatoni with sheep ragù, a rich and hearty first course; sheep in tomato sauce, slow-cooked according to traditional rural recipes; and the essential arrosticini, skewers that fill the air with the scent of summer evenings.

Two evenings of celebration in the square

Beyond the gastronomy, the Sheep Festival offers an entertainment program designed for all ages. The evenings are accompanied by music, dancing, and karaoke, in a cheerful, family-friendly atmosphere that invites guests to linger at the tables until late. Admission is free, allowing residents and visitors alike to share the pleasure of tradition without barriers.

An event born from the community

The event is organized by the La Strada Romana association, a local group that gives the area its name and sought to create an event capable of highlighting the gastronomic roots of Castrocielo. The festival is part of a summer season particularly rich in events in this Ciociaria town, which hosts several other local celebrations during the same weeks.

Castrocielo and the Ciociaria region

Located in southern Lazio, just a few kilometers from Aquino and Cassino, Castrocielo is a village with an ancient past, dominated by the ruins of the castle that gives it its name. The area, the heart of the Ciociaria, is known for its rolling landscapes, typical products, and a strong culture of hospitality. Participating in the Sheep Festival means discovering an authentic corner of the province of Frosinone, far from the most beaten tourist paths, where good food is still a shared ritual.
