The historic late-summer footrace through the seven municipalities of the Vigezzo Valley
The Sgamela'a d'Vigezz is much more than just a footrace; it is a piece of Italian sporting history. Founded in 1972, it is considered one of the oldest road races in Italy. For over half a century, it has drawn athletes, walkers, and enthusiasts to the heart of the Vigezzo Valley in the Piedmont region every late summer. The name, in the local Vigezzino dialect, translates roughly to 'the Vigezzo stroll,' perfectly capturing the event's spirit: a popular, inclusive race that traverses one of the most picturesque mountain regions in the Western Alps.
The classic 25 km course runs largely along mule tracks and mountain paths, offering spectacular views of the Valley of Painters—a nickname earned by the Vigezzo Valley thanks to its long-standing artistic heritage. The route touches all seven municipalities of the valley, starting and finishing in Santa Maria Maggiore, the valley's main hub, while passing through charming villages and hamlets such as Druogno, Buttogno, Craveggia, Toceno, Villette, Re, and Malesco. Running the Sgamela'a means discovering churches, bell towers, stone houses, and vistas that change with every turn.
The event offers multiple formats to accommodate expert athletes, casual walkers, and families:
Since 2024, the race has been organized by Atletica Ossolana Vigezzo and is part of the Corri in Vigezzo circuit, a sports and tourism project that brings together various races throughout the Vigezzo summer. In 2026, the circuit expands further to five events, including the municipality of Re for the first time. The Sgamela'a d'Vigezz remains the valley's premier event, a moment when the entire Vigezzo community gathers to celebrate sport, friendship, and their land.
The 2026 edition of the Sgamela'a d'Vigezz, the 53rd, will take place on Sunday, August 30, 2026, with its base in Santa Maria Maggiore. The event is part of the Corri in Vigezzo 2026 circuit, which grows to five events throughout the summer in 2026 and includes the municipality of Re for the first time. The Sgamela'a remains the valley's flagship event and ideally closes the circuit's summer calendar.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition (final times, bib collection points, and category rankings) will be published on the official website sgamelaa.it in the weeks leading up to the race. Based on the event's established structure, the three historic routes are planned:
