The Ferragosto patronal festival in Santa Maria Maggiore, featuring bonfires, a pyromusical show, and a traditional costume procession.
In the heart of Valle Vigezzo, in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, the town of Santa Maria Maggiore celebrates its patronal feast dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption every Ferragosto. It is one of the most cherished events of the Vigezzo summer, blending religious devotion, alpine tradition, and entertainment in one of Piedmont's most beautiful villages, known as the "village of painters and chimney sweeps."
The festival kicks off on the evening of August 14th at the Centro del Fondo area, where the most scenic moment takes place: the grand pyromusical show, featuring fireworks synchronized to music. The show is preceded by the lighting of the evocative and auspicious Assumption Bonfire, fueled by fir branchesโan ancient propitiatory rite that illuminates the Ferragosto night.
Before and after the show, visitors can dine and enjoy music at the Alpini Country Festival, organized by the Santa Maria Maggiore Alpini Group at the covered structure of the Centro del Fondo, offering traditional dishes and musical entertainment.
On Ferragosto, August 15th, the festival reaches its religious peak: a solemn Holy Mass is celebrated in the Parish Church, followed by a procession in traditional costumes through the village streets. The traditional Vigezzo attire worn by the faithful makes the parade a true snapshot of popular culture and alpine memory.
The celebration does not end on Ferragosto: on August 22nd, the procession for the Octave of the Assumption takes place, during which the statue of the Virgin is carried on shoulders through the village streets by women in traditional dress, in an intimate procession deeply tied to the community's identity.
Between the sacred and the profane, the roar of fireworks, and the solemnity of the processions, the Assumption Festival of Santa Maria Maggiore is much more than a patronal recurrence: it is the moment when the entire Valle Vigezzo comes together, welcoming residents, vacationers, and visitors to one of the most beloved traditions of Upper Piedmont.
The 2026 edition of the Santa Maria Maggiore patronal festival confirms the calendar of celebrations in the Valle Vigezzo village, spread between Ferragosto and the following week, with a program that weaves together entertainment, alpine tradition, and religious devotion.
