The widespread Christmas of the Antigorio Valley, among fountains, streams, and ancient washhouses
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Presepi sull'acqua is the great widespread Christmas event in Crodo, a small town in the Antigorio Valley in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, in the far north of Piedmont. The idea that makes it unique is simple and poetic: using water as the common thread for all the nativity scenes. The cribs are set up along fountains, streams, brooks, mule tracks, and the ancient washhouses that still dot the village and its inhabited centers today, transforming everyday spaces into surprising settings.
The strength of the event lies in it being a true open-air itinerary, to be explored on foot without haste. The dozens of nativity scenes are not concentrated in a single square, but are distributed throughout the main town and mountain hamlets like Viceno and Cravegna, from the 500-meter altitude of Crodo up to the 1,200 meters of Alpe Foppiano. Walking along, you cross paths, mule tracks, and corners of the village that tell the alpine identity of Ossola, amidst stone, wood, and the constant sound of mountain water.
A busy calendar of initiatives curated by the Municipality of Crodo and the Pro Loco Crodo 2.0, in collaboration with the Ossola Protected Areas Management Body, revolves around the route:
In an era of identical Christmas markets, Crodo offers an authentic, mountain-sized Christmas: free, accessible at all hours, and designed for those who love to walk and be surprised. It is the ideal opportunity to combine the magic of the holidays with the discovery of one of the most evocative valleys in Piedmont, far from the crowds and immersed in the alpine landscape of the Antigorio Valley.
After eleven editions of growing success, Presepi sull'acqua is expected to return to Crodo for Christmas 2026-2027. The event usually maintains its proven formula: a free, open-air itinerary that links the main town of the Antigorio Valley to its mountain hamlets, with dozens of nativity scenes set up along the water and a rich array of guided tours, workshops, and gastronomic appointments.
At the moment, the precise dates and the program for the new edition have not yet been officially published. We recommend checking for updates on the crodoeventi.it website and the event's social media channels before planning your visit.
The detailed program for the 12th edition has not yet been published. Based on previous editions, the event usually includes the open-air nativity scene route, which can be visited for free, food and wine weekends with local specialties, guided tours and excursions (including evening ones), and workshops for children. Dates and the full calendar will be announced by the organization on the official website crodoeventi.it in the weeks leading up to Christmas 2026.
Crodo can be reached by car from the A26 motorway (Gravellona Toce exit), continuing along the state road towards Domodossola and then the Antigorio Valley. By train, you arrive in Domodossola (Milan-Brig international line) and continue with local buses towards Ossola.
The nativity scene route is outdoors and can be visited for free 24 hours a day, during the day and in the evening thanks to the lighting of the nativity scenes.
Wear comfortable shoes and warm clothing: the route develops on mule tracks and mountain paths, with significant elevation changes to reach the highest hamlets. A map with altitudes and a webapp with geolocated audio guides are available. For gastronomic weekends and guided tours, check the official website crodoeventi.it in advance.
