The amateur mountain running gathering in Vermiglio, Val di Sole
Sgabanada Estiva is the summer edition of one of the most beloved events in Vermiglio, a town in the upper Val di Sole, in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). Following the massive success of the historic winter ski mountaineering Sgabanada, now in its twenty-fifth year, the Vermiglio community decided to bring that same convivial spirit to the warmer months, creating a non-competitive mountain running gathering to celebrate the arrival of summer.
The formula is the same one that made the original Sgabanada famous: no real stopwatch, no competitive pressure, just the pure joy of climbing together toward the pastures and huts surrounding the village. The group sets off early in the morning from the Oratorio Don Bosco in the center of Vermiglio, following trails that lead to the Bait de Mezòl, winding through flower-filled meadows, conifer forests, and offering glimpses of the Adamello-Presanella and Ortles-Cevedale mountain ranges.
Sgabanada Estiva is designed to be truly inclusive: seasoned runners, families, and mountain enthusiasts of all ages are welcome to take part at their own pace. This grassroots, community-focused atmosphere sets it apart from typical trail running races; the goal is not to finish first, but to share a day of sport and friendship in one of the most picturesque landscapes in western Trentino.
The true heart of Sgabanada Estiva is the social aspect: once the climb is complete, a lunch for all participants is served from 12:30 PM. It is the perfect opportunity to catch up, share stories from the morning, and savor the authentic flavors of Val di Sole mountain cuisine. It is the classic finale of a traditional Trentino village festival, where sport serves primarily as a pretext to get together.
Situated at over 1,250 meters above sea level at the foot of the Tonale Pass, Vermiglio is the gateway to a territory of immense natural beauty, nestled between the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park and the Stelvio National Park. Sgabanada Estiva is the ideal occasion to discover this corner of Trentino at the most beautiful time of year, when the pastures turn vibrant green and the mountains open up to hikers.
The second edition of Sgabanada Estiva brought Vermiglio to life on Sunday, June 21, 2026, confirming the non-competitive amateur mountain running format launched the previous year. Runners, walkers, and families responded in large numbers to the event that officially kicks off the summer in the upper Val di Sole.
The group met early in the morning at the Oratorio Don Bosco in the town center before tackling the climb towards the Bait de Mezòl together, passing through meadows and forests. The day concluded with the customary convivial lunch at the summit, the heart of the event.
