The national music competition dedicated to young school talents in Serradifalco
The "Serradifalco City of Music" National Music Competition is one of the most established school music events in central Sicily. It takes place every year in late May in the town of Serradifalco, in the province of Caltanissetta, attracting students and young musicians from all over the island. The organization is managed by the music teachers of the "F. Puglisi" Comprehensive Institute, under the direction of the school principal, Prof. Valeria Vella.
The competition is aimed at primary, middle, and high school students, as well as young musicians, who perform as soloists, chamber groups, orchestras, and choirs. Each edition involves about thirty schools and several hundred young people, who take turns on stage over several days of performances. The auditions are held at the "A. De Curtis" Theater in Serradifalco, which becomes the musical heart of the town for a few days.
Performances are evaluated by a qualified jury composed of professors and masters from Sicilian conservatories, particularly the Palermo Conservatory. The commission assigns scores for each category and rewards the best performers with certificates and vouchers for the purchase of instruments and musical materials, thus recognizing the commitment of the young people and the schools that support them in their training.
More than just a competition, the event represents a moment of growth and encounter: for many students, it is their first opportunity to perform in front of an audience and a jury of experts. The event contributes to spreading musical culture in the Nisseno area and strengthening the role of music-oriented schools as centers of artistic training.
Serradifalco is a small town in the province of Caltanissetta, in the heart of Sicily, in an area traditionally linked to agriculture and sulfur mining. Through this competition, the town has built an identity over the years linked to music and the promotion of young talent, becoming a reference point for schools throughout the region.
The 2026 edition, the eleventh, concluded on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the "A. De Curtis" Theater in Serradifalco, organized by the music faculty of the "F. Puglisi" Comprehensive Institute under the direction of Prof. Valeria Vella. Approximately 800 students from about thirty Sicilian schools took turns on stage, including orchestras, choirs, soloists, and chamber groups.
The jury was chaired by Maestro Marcello Enna (violin, Palermo Conservatory), assisted by professors Michele Lacagnina (guitar), Emanuele Anzalone (clarinet), Pasqualino Lalumia (trumpet), and Sara Mastrosimone (piano). Among those awarded the highest marks (100/100) were the orchestras of the "F. Petrarca" school in Catania and the "F. P. Polizzano" school in Gangi, and among the soloists, Salvatore Donato Battaglia (Nicosia), Nathan Carbonaro (Comiso), and Aurelio Guttadauro (Catania).
Performances are held at the "A. De Curtis" Theater in Serradifalco (CL), in the province of Caltanissetta.
By car, Serradifalco can be reached via the SS122 and the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway, Caltanissetta exit; the town is about 15 km from the provincial capital. The reference railway station is Caltanissetta, connected by local buses.
The competition is reserved for schools and young musicians. The call for entries, forms, and registration fees are published annually on the "F. Puglisi" Comprehensive Institute website. For information: tel. +39 0934 931980, email [email protected].
