About Meatball Festival

Every summer, the village of Serra di Pratola, in the municipality of Pratola Serra (Avellino province), dedicates an entire evening to the meatball: served in tomato sauce or fried, in a bun or on a plate. The Meatball Festival is the gastronomic highlight of Serra in Fest, a three-day celebration of music and tradition held in Piazza Tiglio in honor of Saint Audeno, the village's patron saint. In 2025, the festival marked its 44th edition, cementing its status as one of the most beloved events of the Irpinian summer.

A meatball worth a whole festival

In Serra di Pratola, the oldest part of the municipality of Pratola Serra in the province of Avellino, the meatball is not just a side dish: it is a community symbol. For over forty years, in the heart of summer, this village perched on the slopes overlooking the Sabato Valley has been preparing its pallottole (meatballs) for all who make the climb. The Meatball Festival celebrated its 44th edition in 2025: a rare continuity, started in the early eighties and passed down through generations of local families.

The bond with Saint Audeno

The festival was not born as a tourist initiative but as an offshoot of the patronal feast: the meatballs are prepared in honor of Saint Audeno, the patron saint of Serra di Pratola. This explains the atmosphere of the evening, halfway between popular devotion and a village party: people eat together because the saint brings them together, and the handed-down recipe becomes a tangible way to celebrate local belonging. This is a typical trait of inland Campania, where the festival calendar is still marked by patron saints.

Serra in Fest: three days of music and gastronomy

Since 2024, the festival has been part of Serra in Fest, an event that transforms Piazza Tiglio into an open-air stage for three consecutive evenings. Alongside the food stalls, live concerts and DJ sets take place, featuring a lineup that has hosted national folk and world music acts like Folkabbestia and Riserva Moac, the Bottari of Macerata Campania, and local groups. The formula remains the same: dinner outdoors followed by festivities in the square until late at night.

What to eat

The undisputed star is the handmade meatloaf, prepared according to the traditional recipe and offered in two classic versions:

  • Meatballs in tomato sauce, slow-cooked in tomato gravy;
  • Fried meatballs, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside;
  • served in a bun for eating on the go, or on a plate for those who prefer to sit at the tables;
  • accompanied by other food stalls offering local specialties and Irpinian wines.

The organizers' philosophy is simple: genuine ingredients, traditional recipes, and a convivial spirit. No gourmet reinterpretations, no elaborate staging: the Serra meatball is good because it never changes.

Pratola Serra and the Sabato Valley

Pratola Serra has just over three thousand inhabitants and was founded in 1812 from the union of two settlements: Serra, the oldest village overlooking the hill, and Pratola, which grew later along the road to Puglia. We are in the Campania Region, about twenty minutes from Avellino, in an agricultural area bordering the famous Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo wine regions: visitors arriving for the festival are just a stone's throw from some of Italy's most celebrated vineyards. The village of Serra, with its narrow streets and panoramic square, is the perfect place to understand what Irpinia was like before the industrialization brought by the Pratola Serra engine plant.

The 2026 edition

The event is traditionally held in August, around the days of the patronal feast. As of today, the program and official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been released: it is best to keep an eye on the Serra in Fest social media channels and the notices from the Municipality of Pratola Serra, which usually publish the poster a few weeks before the event.

Meatball Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Serra di Pratola Meatball Festival has not yet been officially announced. The event is traditionally held in August in Piazza Tiglio, during the feast in honor of Saint Audeno and as part of the Serra in Fest program. Dates, musical program, and times will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.

As of the update of this page, the official dates for the 2026 Serra di Pratola Meatball Festival have not been published. The reference remains the month of August, when the village in the municipality of Pratola Serra (Avellino province, Campania) celebrates its patron saint, Saint Audeno, and sets up stalls in Piazza Tiglio.

In 2025, the festival reached its 44th edition as part of the three-day Serra in Fest: the continuity of the event suggests a new edition, but until the official poster is released, detailed information remains to be verified. We recommend checking the Serra in Fest social media channels and the notices from the Municipality of Pratola Serra before traveling.
