The car-free cycling tour of the Sella mountain passes, starting from Corvara
The Sellaronda Bike Day is one of the most beloved non-competitive cycling events in the Alps. For an entire day, the four Dolomite passes surrounding the Sella massif—Passo Gardena, Passo Sella, Passo Pordoi, and Passo Campolongo—are completely closed to motorized traffic and given back to bicycles. The result is a rare experience: cycling through some of the most spectacular mountains in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage site, without the noise and danger of cars.
In Corvara in Badia, located in Alta Badia (Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige), the event reaches one of its highlights. Corvara is one of the most popular starting points and reference hubs for the loop: from here, cyclists head toward Colfosco to tackle the climb to Passo Gardena before continuing the circuit in a counter-clockwise direction. The village hosts one of the fixed first-aid stations located along the route, alongside those at the top of each pass.
The loop covers approximately 53 kilometers with a total elevation gain of 1,600 meters. There is no mandatory starting point or set start time: everyone can begin wherever they prefer, provided they ride the loop in a counter-clockwise direction. This is not a race: there are no timers, no rankings, and no registration is required. The event is open to everyone and completely free of charge.
The Organizing Committee provides assistance along the entire route: fixed first-aid stations are positioned at the top of each of the four passes (Campolongo, Pordoi, Sella, and Gardena) and at strategic points such as Corvara village, Arabba village, the Miramonti junction, and the Pian de Schiavaneis area. For safety reasons, the use of a protective helmet is strongly recommended.
Beyond its sporting dimension, the Sellaronda Bike Day is a celebration of sustainable mobility and slow mountain tourism. Children, families, cycle tourists, and enthusiasts of all levels share the road in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere, with stops at mountain huts and cafes along the passes. The two annual editions, in spring and autumn, frame the cycling season in Alta Badia and the Ladin valleys around the Sella.
The autumn day of the 2026 Sellaronda Bike Day is set for Saturday, September 12, 2026. Completing the year is the spring edition on June 6, 2026. On both dates, the Gardena, Sella, Pordoi, and Campolongo passes remain closed to motorized traffic from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
From Corvara in Badia, in Alta Badia, cyclists start toward Colfosco and tackle the climb to Passo Gardena, continuing the 53 km loop in a counter-clockwise direction. Participation is free and open to all, with no registration required, and first-aid stations are available at the top of each pass and in the villages along the route, including Corvara.
Corvara in Badia can be reached by car from the A22 Brenner motorway (exit Bressanone/Val Pusteria or Chiusa/Val Gardena) and via the SS244 Val Badia road. By train, the nearest stations are Bressanone or Brunico, with connecting bus services.
On the event days, the Gardena, Sella, Pordoi, and Campolongo passes are closed to motorized traffic from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. In case of heavy traffic, the reopening may be delayed.
Participation is free, with no registration required. Helmets and clothing suitable for high altitudes and variable mountain weather are recommended.
