The traveling handmade market of South Tyrol, held at Raiffeisenplatz in Scena
The SelberGMOCHT Markt—whose name in the South Tyrolean dialect literally means "self-made" or "handmade"—is a traveling market that has been touring South Tyrolean towns since 2018 to give visibility to local creators. In Scena/Schenna, a charming holiday village at the foot of Mount Ivigna overlooking the Merano basin, the event takes place on Raiffeisenplatz, the village's central market square.
For an afternoon and evening, the square comes alive with stalls and booths: local producers offer genuine specialties and healthy delicacies cultivated in their own gardens, fields, and cellars, while artisans showcase their original creations. The market brings together various crafts that reflect the South Tyrolean manual tradition:
The format emphasizes direct contact between producer and buyer: behind every stall is the person who crafted the object or grew the product, ready to share their story.
The SelberGMOCHT Markt in Scena is organized in collaboration with the local Tourist Board and takes place in the late afternoon and evening, when the warm summer light of South Tyrol makes the square particularly inviting. Admission is free, and the atmosphere is that of a genuine village festival, perfect for strolling between stalls, sampling local treats, and purchasing authentic gifts.
The municipality of Scena, in the Province of Bolzano (South Tyrol, in the Trentino-Alto Adige region), is a classic tourist destination in the Merano area, known for its castle, scenic trails, and views over the Merano basin. The traveling SelberGMOCHT market perfectly embodies the spirit of the region: sustainability, short supply chains, and the promotion of local artisan work.
