Trails, communities, and mountains in transition in Paesana
Segni e Passi is a project aimed at enhancing the hiking and community heritage of Paesana, a town in the Po Valley in the Province of Cuneo, located in the heart of Piedmont at the foot of Monviso. Launched in 2025 with the support of the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, the project is promoted by the Municipality of Paesana together with the Pro Loco Paesana, the Caracol cooperative, and the Valtemo Association. The goal is to reimagine the network of trails around the Paesana basin as a space for connection, slow tourism, and mountain stewardship.
The project's central theme is mountains in transition: how to keep mountain paths, hamlets, and traditional knowledge alive in an era of change. Through co-design workshops, residents and experts have identified six itineraries covering different sides of the basin, some of which are designed to be accessible to people with reduced mobility and those with strollers.
The 2026 edition featured two free public events:
The spring stage combines hiking with live performance: along the route, actors and musicians accompany the walkers, turning the trail into a sprawling stage set amidst meadows, woods, and hamlets. It is a way to tell the story of the mountains not just as a sporting destination, but as a cultural landscape made of history, crafts, and folk traditions.
Segni e Passi is designed for families, hikers, and curious visitors: the proposed routes are easy to navigate, and all events are free to attend. The project invites you to discover Paesana at a slow pace, from the Po River as it takes its first steps to the peaks that frame the valley, rediscovering the deep bond between the community and its mountains.
The 2026 edition of Segni e Passi consisted of two free stages in the Paesana area.
March 13 and 14: Friday evening, from 6:00 PM at Trattoria Valle Po (Ghisola hamlet), a meeting with experts in trail management, tourism, and regional innovation, followed by a merenda sinoira; Saturday morning, meeting at 10:00 AM in Piazza Vittorio Veneto for a walk on local trails with a packed lunch.
April 18: meeting at 2:00 PM in Pian Vitun (Agliasco) for a nature-theatre walk of about 5 km on a dirt path to the Ferrere hamlet, with itinerant theater and live music along the way and a final snack offered to participants. Independent return or free shuttle by reservation.
Paesana can be reached by car from Saluzzo via the Valle Po Provincial Road (about 30 minutes). From Cuneo and Turin, follow the plains to Saluzzo, then head up the valley. Event meeting points are in the town center (Piazza Vittorio Veneto), the Ghisola hamlet, and the Pian Vitun area (Agliasco), where parking is available.
For the walks, seasonal mountain-appropriate clothing and trekking shoes are recommended; bring a packed lunch when indicated. Some stages require independent return or use of a free shuttle (reservation required). For information and registration: [email protected].
